A good plug and play device is the Pricespy: Netgear DGND3700 I use it on Vodafone Cable in Christchurch and don't have any issues. Super simple you won't need a professional.
Works on Cable and with a built-in ADSL modem in case you move so good all round unit.

Use this and Keep the Vodafone Router as a backup.

If you have an Android Device I recommend Google Play: WiFi Analyzer Great for finding interference free channels in your home.

Newtown has heaps of WiFi congestion - it'll be that...

I know a few people around there who can't get anything good out of WiFi who live around the shop areas.
