Lame.

I'm a geek, a gamer, a dad, a Quic user, and an IT Professional. I have a full rack home lab, size 15 feet, an epic beard and Asperger's. I'm a bit of a Cypherpunk, who believes information wants to be free and the Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. Wow wtf vodafone.

I fail to see any correlation between HFC and chorus price increases.
If anything a lower HFC cost would more entice new signups to HFC.

I’m sure someone in marketing / management somewhere thought this is a good idea, but it isn’t.

Brumfondl: Cable is going up $4 no matter what plan from the look of things. Wonder if that will have any bearing on people like me (and, at a guess, Mauricio) who are still on older 130Mbit plans, not the newer 100Mbit plans. If my plan does go it I may just dump cable. I don't really need it and I'm not on a contract.

We shall see.

Thanks for the link. From that page:

"As you may have seen recently reported in the media, there have been changes in the industry to the costs of delivering broadband and home phone services for all providers in New Zealand. These cost changes affect the conditions that all providers operate under and unfortunately our prices will need to change to reflect these new conditions."

Nothing to do with investment in cable infrastructure as JohnR suggested. A bit cheeky to bundle up HFC price increases with cooper, when Vodafone owns 100% of its cable network, both HFC and copper/fibre networks are independent, some times mutually exclusive and use different technology.

So why are prices going up being blamed on industry changes of which have resulted in copper price actually going down recently?

Dylan

Where does the 50/2 Cable Broadband plan with 150GB come in this list?

I can't correlate what's on my bill, the monthly charge and the list above. My bill says 'Play', but the monthly charge is different to the above list :-)

There will be information included with your bill if you will be affected by this increase. It sounds like you might be on another plan, might be in term, or there could be another reason for it not matching up for you. Either way we'll include information with your bill before the change affects you.

So as freitasm said, how does the Chorus copper pricing affect HFC and Fiber customers?

Also if it is for "upgrading the HFC network", its pretty much a given that Vodafone would need to upgrade the network now and again to retain customers, just as every other physical line provider.

Don't know if someone else has said this but it's only $4 a month people, a massive $48 over the course of the year.

Yes, yes. It's only $48/yr. Multiply this for a quarter of a million customers and someone's laughing on the way to the bank, telling a tale of how the Chorus pricing influence everyone's broadband price - even on those parts of the network 100% owned by them.

To continue the calculations, if one assumes vodafone has 500,000 internet customers (30% of 1.9mil market share minus a bit for dial up), its adds up to quite a bit.

If we work with the 500k Figure, thats an extra 2 million in revenue per month, or $24 million per year. Back of a napkin calculations are never going to be accurate but it shows the ballpark we're working in. Even if only half of them were getting a price increase thats an extra $12 million per year, nothing to sneeze at.

I wonder how much their actual wholesale cost (or rather, predicted cost) has gone up by, and then how much this will bring up their revenue (and possibly profit).

Remember, as pointed out by Steve's blog, TelstraClear was bigger than Vodafone in numbers, came with its own national fibre network and own cable network in Wellington, Christchurch and Kapiti. So the costs for Vodafone broadband wouldn't chance as much as the others because there's this mix.
