I've not had time to check that many channels but I can't see that much improvement in quality, if any. TV One late news on Monday night looked rubbish - much worse than before. Smeary, composite desaturated pictures.

Whether this is TVNZ, SKY or TCL - who knows?

Also Flight of the Conchords on Prime still looks like a bittorrent.

Setup: s-video from a TCL digitial STB into a Pioneer HDD-DVD recorder, component out to a 32" Sony CRT.

Have you compared the picture plugging the STB directly into the TV?

TelstraClear: Hi

.......
Picture quality improvements will follow during the first week of December.

.......

As per Jeff's reply 6 Nov.  New channels are being broadcast in improved quality.  The quality improvements for existing channels are yet to come.

Exactly... you are viewing a re-encoded channel through your dvd recorder.

Check out Vibe, CI, Fox News, Bloomberg to see the difference.

lchiu7: World TV (all channels) and Sky 1 (among others) are still pretty poor. But TV1-3 are much better and almost as good Freeview (though it's not a fair comparison with Freeview coming over component and TCL over s-video)

Sorry - may not have been following this thread closely enough - but from Ichiu's comment I was led to believe the FTAs were improved already.

My signal chain has not changed, so I am comparing like with like - but if anyone suspects I'm degrading the picture by live transcoding s-video to component through the DVD recorder, let me know! Just trying to figure out where the nasty composite artefacts are creeping in. Honestly it looks worse now than before Nov 14th.

BTW my [slightly ranty] tags got removed in the original post. - no angle brackets allowed!

From what I have seen it's the STB, the feed over the cable is great quality, even on the older channels.  I don't know how it can be fixed apart from swaping the ADB box, yes Vibe/C&I/Bloomberg look a "little" better, but through the ADB it's still a whole lot worse than what you get on a newer model Sky Pace STB (even through Composite, let alone component)... but hey that's just me what would I know.

I think I was just hoping :(  On reviewing the PQ on TV1-3 is the same as before. that is not so good, especially compard with Freeview. We can only hope things will get better

So are the new channels for digital only? We have a Digital and a analogue STB in our home which up until now have had the same channels. The analogue one is not getting the new channels. Is it going to?

Also should the analogue STB improve for picture quality as well when the upgrades are made next month?

Ideally I would like to put a digital box is for the second TV but at an additional $15 over and above the cost of the analogue STB I just cannot begin to justify it. I do fine it strange that it costs $5 dollars for the first one and $15 for the second. I would have thought that Telstra would be keen to move people of the old analogue STB's.

New channels and PQ improvement do seem only for digital services only. I'm not surprised with new channels/contents on digital only as it seems to be the only business-viable way to sell digital services like Sky's analogue vs digital satelite.
