You shouldn't need to turn on Keep alives or anything... This is an ARP problem not a Keep Alive problem. Buy WRT54GL, upgrade to stock DD-WRT (2.3 SP2 or whatever version you want). Set your static IP for the public/internet interface, and leave it in the corner to collect dust like a good internet router doing it's job.

My 'neutered' WRT54G v5 has been working well since the upgrade to DD-WRT Micro - would be worth trying that before ditching the router and going for a GL

I'm running the DD-WRT v23 firmware and all is going well.

I have had an excellent run and am no longer losing connection to the net as long as I have "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" enabled. When I disable that, I find the problems return (not immediately but within 12 hours).

Reading up a little, it is suggested to leave "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" disabled but I think I prefer a reliable connection versus any increase in download speeds!

Thanks to everyone for their help on this. I'm very pleased with this particular router - it is way better then the Netgear one.

Hey there

I had the same problem on a Dynalink router - with the same set up as you. Laptop running Vista, and desktop running XP. The Laptop used to lose the connection very frequently if I was in the lounge. It didn't happen if I was in the bedroom, which is close to the Router.

The problem stopped when my next door neighbour (who had an unsecured wireless network) moved out. I think his network was interferring with mine....

Yea, this is quite possibly the case as there are a few networks around me. After resetting my router after upgrading the firmware, it seemed to stop for about 3 days, then i turned remote configureation on and the problem started again. So i turnd it off and havn't had any more problems. Could this also have something to do with it?

I also have a few (three) other wireless networks around, but since upgrading to the DD-WRT v23 firmware my router has been fine (as long as I enable the Block Anonymous Internet Requests).

Hi there, I have been keeping track of this thread for the last few days as I have just moved into a house with Telstra and need a wireless access point/ router, as outlined in this thread:

I read with interest the recommendations for the WRT54GL, and plan on buying one.

Things I'm curious about however, are:
1. Price- $200 in DSE, about $120-140 online (checked pricespy)? I realise DSE is a high street shop as opposed to online shops, but that is still a *big* difference- are the low prices about right?
2. Software- from the reading I have done I can see that G is the standard version, GL is the linux version enabling third party software modding. I'm not worried about the difference in price, but is the GL one more suited for Telstra/ wireless networking in general, and is it easy to work with? I am willing to have a go, but am very new to wireless networking... thanks for your help

Yep, you will always pay more when purchasing from Dick Smith. I purchased the GL from Tastech in Christchurch and it cost me $130 + $5 shipping. Dick Smith is great when you 'need it now' but if you can wait a day or two, 9 times out of 10 purchasing online is the better option.

The GL is very easy to use and with the third party firmware it really adds many further functions (some which might be useful, others less so). One instant plus is the ability to boost the strength of the wireless signal.

There is a great article here http://lifehacker.com/software/router/hack-attack-turn-your-60-router-into-a-600-router-178132.php on how to go about doing the flashing of firmware etc. Have a read before you decide to go down this road. Do note that the latest stable firmware is now up to DD-WRT v23 SP2 (the article used the DD-WRT v23 SP1 firmware).

There are also guys on Trademe selling the GL's. But Price Spy is good... Personally (since i live in Wellington) I use Ascent (www.ascent.co.nz) they are great, since you can do a Cash On Delivery so go into their offices on Willis St, pay "cash" with Eftpos, and walk away with your router. They also do online, and don't charge for delivery. Just checking now they seem to be out of stock. But worth e-mailing them as I have always had great service from them (no I don't work for Ascent, just find they give great service, and never complain when i want to Return an item if it is busted. Spent 2 months with a $60 3.5" USB enclosure proving that it was broken, and they gave me a new one at cost.).
The upgrade from the stock firmware to the DD-WRT is very straight forward, on the DD-WRT wiki they have screenshots with the step-by-step process, worth having the 2.3 SP2 firmware, however I am running he beta 2.4 firmware without an issue.

I had a bizarre experience with Telstraclear (TCL) yesterday.

I am currently in the process of relocating from Seatoun Heights, Seatoun in Wellington to Brunswick Street, Lower hutt. Both areas are within TCL stated cable network zone. I currently have TCL cable service and have had so for over a year and a half. I am very satified with the service, therefore I was hoping to continue receiving the service at my new home. However when I called TCL I was told there was no availability to that specific dwelling. This, I was told, was because it was a multiunit dwelling and that there was some conflict with TCL as Telecom was connected to some of those dwellings at the complex (please note the dwellings are simply flats side by side, not an apartment complex). I enquired if there were other properties receiving TCL cable and was advised that the neighbouring properties (on the same street!) had availability. I stated that this doesn't make sense and the representive transfered me to someone else.

Representive number two stated that representive number one did not know what he was talking about and that the reason that the dwelling cannot receive cable from TCL is because it is too close to the CBD of lower hutt. The representive further stated that because of this proximity to Lower Hutt's CBD there is no availability to this dwelling as TCL is not allowed to conflict with existing fibre/cable infrastructure in the CBD area. How can this be if the neighbours are getting cable internet from TCL!

There seems to be underlying truth to this discriminatory selection of servicability, to dwellings that have cable running down there street, that TCL are not revealing.

If anyone can enlighten me as to why this is please advise.

I get a number of micro outages each night. Everything functions as you would expect except that i find outlook spits up errors about not being able to connect to the pop server.

On the very odd occasion i -may- get a page cannot be displayed etc. Quick refresh sees it right though.

I've tried the DNS fix, and i'm using no router. Modem has a direct ethernet connection to the NIC. I was thinking it might be a faulty NIC/drivers... Not sure now.

Well. Its been a while between rebuilds. Will see if that sorts it out.

Having this problem on the DI-524 (I think it is, I haven't got the router with me currently). Driving me nuts. Connection drops out all the time, tonight particularly bad - I have gone to a neighbours to assure I can post this. I get connections timing out and pages half loading. It is infuriating, as it is 4 out of 5 pages that don't load fully. Is this a problem on my end or TC's?
I have discovered that there seems to be a couple of wireless networks popped up in the perimeter, though I can't find them tonight. Would this influence it?

Laptop running vista, desktop running xp, router had been working fine for 6 or 7 months until now.

ellboss, that is strange, especially since the router had been working fine for 6-7 months and now isn't. I assume you have done the usual rebooting/restarting the router but with no joy?

Not saying that you have the same issue as I did, but is there a setting in the router to block anonymous internet requests at all? I have heard that other wireless networks can have an impact, but things have been rock solid for me (touch wood!) Where I am situated, I have at least three others (sometimes up to six) in the area.

Are both your machines wireless or is it just the laptop and your PC is wired?

I also noted on another post of yours that you had some issues back in Jan, but you managed to resolve these?

Your wireless frequency could be in use and causing drop-outs, however if you are still getting dropouts while wired then I suspect it's the router problem, so try changing the internal network range to something other than 192.168.1.x, ie 10.168.54.x or whatever, could be the ARP corruption issue.
If it's only on wireless, then try changing the frequency the AP works on.

To check for wireless issues, get Netstumbler this will let you see what signals are about, then move away from any large signals by at least 3channels. This last bit gets some folk caught out, the channels are overlapping, so even though someone might be on Ch6 they will acutally be putting energy over channels 4,5,6,7,8 so always move 3channels away from the loudest signals.
