I had a play around with my HG659 this evening, and it was reasonably straight forward to get it to act just as an ATA sitting behind my third party router.

To do this, I disabled VLAN tagging on the WAN, removed all connections from it other than the phone service, then connected it to the network via WAN. It also makes sense to disable wireless if you're using it this way.

I just got UFB installed today with Vodafone as a provider. Would you be able to give me a few more details as to how you went about the Huawei as an ATA? I have admin access to the Huawei but the settings seem somewhat counter-intuitive (to me at least!).

Edit: Never mind, after a bit of trial and error I got it working. I'm not quite sure I could describe the steps I went through but if anyone needs to know just pm me and I'll have a go at working out the steps in reverse :)

Please do. It would be really helpful. setup with regards to what to change on the Huawei and 3rd party router would be really helpful thanks

This is a quick set of instructions for anyone with UFB fibre broadband + phone through Vodafone, who wants to set up their own third party router. The instructions show how to set up the Vodafone router (HG659) so it works just as an analogue telephone adapter (ATA). Using this approach, you can use a third party router to handle your UFB connection, and use the HG659 only to deliver the VOIP phone service.

These instructions assume you have set up your third party router already. Setting up the third party router will differ depending on the make and model. Generally, the only settings that you should need to change are setting the WAN port to "DHCP" and tagging that WAN port "VLAN 10".

1) Unplug all cables from the HG659, except for the power cable.

2) Plug an ethernet cable from one of the yellow LAN ports on the HG659 to your computer.

3) Open your web browser on your computer and go to http://192.168.1.1 to access the management page of the HG659.

4) Log into the HG659 using the account "Admin". You can find the password for your HG659 on the Vodafone help pages here. Note that the username is Admin with a capital.

5) You might be asked to change your password. Feel free to do that, provided you remember the new password.

6) Once you have logged in, click on the red "Internet" button near the top of the page.

7) Scroll down the page until you find the "Internet_Ethernet" section. Click on the "Edit" button just below those words to expand out all of the options in that section.

8) In that section is a box next to the option "Enable VLAN". Uncheck that box, then scroll down and hit "Save" to save the settings.

If you want to disable WiFi, follow the next 3 steps. Otherwise, skip to step 12. If a device uses WiFi from the HG659 after following this set of instructions, it will be behind double NAT and some services may not work.

9) Click on the red "Home Network" button towards the top of the screen.

10) Click on the "WLAN Settings" button to the left.

11) Uncheck the boxes next to "Enable WLAN 2.4GHz" and "Enable WLAN 5GHz" and click save.

12) Plug an ethernet cable from the red WAN port of the HG659 to your network (e.g. a LAN port on your third party router, or a port on your ethernet switch).

13) Plug your phone(s) into the green ATA port(s) on the HG659.

14) After waiting a while, pick up a phone to make sure you hear a dial tone.

If you need to log back into the HG659 after following these steps, you can plug an ethernet cable back into a yellow LAN port and into your computer to access the management page. Note that the address used to access the HG659 may have changed - mine became http://192.168.3.1 automatically.

It's frustrating that Vodafone won't give out the sip password. I have a cisco ata that neatly fits into my network cupboard whereas the huawei doesn't. Should have researched beforehand as I was expecting chorus to use the ont for the phone link.

Agree it's not perfect, but it's better than being stuck with using the Huawei as the router. Not sure why they would keep passwords under wraps like that.

I guess one option would be to cancel the phone through Vodafone and go with a separate VOIP provider.

I spent many hours trying to get it out of VF, but they said it caused too many support issues for them so they lock it.

If you factory reset your huawei and plug it in directly to the ONT and it doesn't get a config (i.e no sip details) then check with the ISP to see that they have provisioned the mac of the router that you have with your port. I've seen this a few times where they have shipped a different router so it was never going to work until you called them up.

I tried to wireshark incoming calls this evening but soon gave up. 2-talk seems a much easier option all things considered.
