I do see why it has a cap though, can't have all the leechers jumping on and ruining off peak speeds.

As others have said, it doesn't make sense that it costs more to download off peak once you've gone over the 75GB off peak cap.
It should still be less or we'll end up back where we started with peak time speed issues.
Another thing, I still think the on peak data price is a bit steep, along with the off peak over cap pricing.

Considering what another company is going to offer (80c/GB on peak and unlimited off peak), I think this new plan may still need some tweaking.
It'd be good if on peak data was charged at $1.02 per GB, along with "unlimited" off peak data.
When you've gone over your 75GB off peak cap it could start charging you, but instead at, say $0.51 per GB.
This would still encourage off peak downloading, and keep the plan more competitive.
This could also perhaps allow everyone to be moved onto the new plan, even if they don't use the off peak data.

Also as someone else asked, If I change to the torrent plan (I'm on Fusion), can I change back to normal pricing (after a billing cycle)?
May wait a while to see what happens before changing, but it is very tempting. If the plan were like the above I'd change right now.

Praise to WxC for offering this plan, it's good to see some progress for internet in NZ.

wow... have quickly read the comments here ... sure i guess it's not a perfect plan, but heck guys, you're getting 75gig a month for free!! ... and a few of you are complaining that you will be paying a little bit more per gig because of this? ...

it seems like a reasonable deal, and as Maverick is saying "you can't please everyone" but atleast they are trying to please as many as they can!

i am paying alot for my connection through another provider (84 gig) but have good speeds all the time... will follow this thread with interest, as i wonder what the speeds will be like ... ie: if you provide it, the leechers will come..

any ways, there's my two cents.

Certaintly, I wasn't disagreeing - this plan will cost you (I mean save me) about $50 a month me thinks - just wanted to get the break even costing out there!

I like the solution (but not for me who uses less than 3GB per month). I am sure they have done the maths and decided that unlimited after midnight will bring their network to a grinding halt. They surely calculated that they need to shift most of the downloads to after midnight, but not all of it. That other ISP is heading towards disaster with that plan, speed will drop to zero for them, but WxC has a good solution which is not simply moving the problem to after midnight. Good job WxC.

Does that mean, no BB contract termination fees?

Sure make the Slingshot plan alot easy to work out the cost for comparasion, than reading through a cloud like other providers seen to do.

Correct me if I am wrong, but when signing up for the Torrent plan, it states 'Once changed to Torrent, a minimum period of 30 calendar days applies'....

Now is that not a minimum contracted term?

And may I ask, why has xnet has decieded to charge more for offpeak hours, once over the 75GB free quota?
It appears to contradict the point of the plan, and entices users in that situaion (having used there full free 75GB) to revert to doing thier downloading etc during peak hours?

I would have thought, it more logical, that after the 75GB is used, the charge be the same as the day day/on-peak rate $1.54GB, or better, cheaper, to still give an incentive to use bandwidth during off-peak hours...

In my mind, I would have thought, the best way would be to charge $1.54 per GB below 75GB....and then after 75GB, $2.56 for peak hours, and $1.54 for off-peak hours...
This way, the user is still paying more for the plan, but it still encourages the user to continue to download/use bandwidth during off-peak hours...the whole point of the plan, to resolve the peak hour bottleneck.

Your thoughts?

As i see it, there is probably a larger group of people in the 30-80gig bracket who will see this as a great idea than people using 80gig + who won't.

Perhaps this is not a plan aimed at the super-heavy data users after all...

Perhaps this plan is not aimed at YOU specificly...

Perhaps the answer here lies in the middle-ground...

$1.02 / GB during off peak would basically void the punishment (it has to be harsh) of overuse of the 75GB (or 60GB in this example).

Though the traffic for peak times can be made cheaper - but of course, this is focused at off peak users.

I never stated what how much quota I expect or desire to use, so how can you know if it is tageted at me or not.

My discussion was related to what is being charged at what times, not how much data is to be used.

This plan is designed to entice users to do their downloading during offpeak hours so to relieve the stress on peak hours, yet charging $2.56 per GB contradicts that.

If a user uses much more quota/bandwidth than xnet desire/have targeted, that user will pay the excess charges as a result, but should not be charged extra for continuing to use bandwidth during offpeak which is for the best...the higher excess charges should be on the peak hours.

I am going to assume the average 'torrenter' that is after this plan still does 15GB per month on peak regardless

bandwidth cost on torrent plan = 15*1.54 + max((x-75)*1.54,0) where x = GBs downloaded
(this of course assumes you wouldn't have been silly enough to download offpeak after exceeding 75GB)

on Standard plan that would be cost = x*1.02

Breakeven point = 23.1 + 1.54x - 115.5 = 1.02x

x = 177GB!

Actually, using your assumptions, I think the breakeven point is a bit more.

That is, using the Torrent plan:
The user downloads 75 GB offpeak for free.
They download another x GB onpeak at $1.536/GB.

Or, using the standard plan:
They download x + 75 GB anytime at $1.024/GB.

So, we have:
   1.536*x + 0*75 = 1.024*(x + 75)
   Therefore x = 150 GB/month
   And the total breakeven quantity is 225 GB/month (= 150 + 75).

How many people consume almost a quarter of a Terabyte a month? Surely not many.

i wasnt directing that at any one person in particular, more provoking thought (or cack-handedly trying to, anywho).

The point still stands... for those within a safe margin of the 75gig this is still a viable option. With no danger of getting charged any penalty rates etc, this may work for a different niche than the uber-user we thought would be targeted.

Although, as those fond of doing the maths are concerned... theres still a truckload to be DL'd.

There certainly is. 225 GB/month equates to about 8 hours a day, every day, of good quality video (at a bit rate of 2 Mbps). Or several operating system ISOs a day.

Another point for Xnet. Keep up the good work.

Be nice to actually achieve the "as fast as my line can go" consistently.

people who use Xnet, pay for the data they consume.
whether they consume 1 gigabute or 300 gigabytes, is their choice. not yours.
Maybe ban under 10 gigabyte users. They might be less profitable, and create more noise.
