Modems "accidentally" connected to directly to 240v can "become faulty" and need replacing.

A replacement modem would give you a definitive answer.

I would never condone doing this. Doing this would be naughty and bad and potentially kill you and be fraud and I'm sure I'll trigger 500 angry replies so don't do it.

Of course Geekzoners would never dream of doing such a thing. We are above that.

Since yesterday my Internet seems to have stabilised. No more weird stuff and good streaming. I am continuing to monitor but if it continues like this there may be nothing to compare when the other modem arrives. I sure wish I knew what was behind this.

I just installed the new modem. No spooky action at a distance, but some small differences. First, my signal bars had fallen back to zero again, but I have stopped taking that too seriously, since it doesn't seem to have a measurable effect on anything else. However, as soon as I hooked up the new modem, signal bars jumped to 3, which I very rarely see. They briefly feel back to 2 but then returned to 3, where they have remained so far.

More interesting was RSRQ, which jumped to -3. I have never seen it that good before. Usually it hovers around -7. It is also jumping back and forth now, between -3 and -8, but -3 is definitely something new.

RSRP has been around -102 - 104. With the old modem, it usually hovered around -107.

The big surprise is RSSI. It is fixed on -95, the worst I have ever seen. However, this doesn't seem to be making a significant difference in practice. Speed test was about 20 Mbps down, as good or better as most of the other speed test results I have been getting recently.

I don't know what significance, if any, to attach to this. I don't really know how to evaluate the different stats, except as rough comparisons. They don't seem to affect speed tests much. I will keep an eye on this for a few days and see if any patterns emerge. but at the moment it doesn't seem to be making a big difference. The old modem has been working well for the past couple of days, with no strange behaviour and we have been able to stream films without problem.

RSSI -103 dBm! That's new. Speed test gives 8 Mbps down, up is 0 and times out with socket error.

How far are you from the tower? It sounds like you suffer from a fluctuating signal or some type of interfearence.

We are probably about 20 km straight line distance. We do not quite have line of sight so there is some bending over a hill. Also a few tree branches. These things certainly could have an effect, but I am comparing to previous performance, not a theoretical ideal. I can live with a marginal signal if that is the only choice. What I don't understand is the extreme inconsistency and odd effects we have suddenly started getting since the modem was replaced. I don't think interference is likely to be an issue due to our relatively isolated location and lack of competing devices.

I have been doing tests with a borrowed modem and have now reconnected the original modem. Although I carefully checked the antenna connectors many times, it now seems that there may indeed be an issue with this, but there could also be a deeper fault with the modem. I still can't be 100% certain.

Can anyone explain to me what the practical significance is of differences in the stats? For example, if RSRP goes from -118 dBm to -102 dBm, what does that actually mean in terms of the modem's performance? How much of a signal strength difference does it represent? I don't really understand what RSRP, RSSI, and RSRQ are saying. All I can do is compare the differences and match that to test speeds, but there do not seem to be clear patterns in many cases.
