lchiu7: Khandallah was one of the first exchanges in NZ to go digital with the NEAC (?) switches. I recall a friend who worked for Telecom at the time but lived in Broadmeadows "arranged" for his home phone to be connected to this exchange so he could have digital services like call waiting etc.

1.1km sounds like a long way from the Exchange if you want decent ADSL service. I would wait and see if the new network topology that TCL is rolling out alleviates your problem before jumping from cable to DSL service. Plus as Bartender notes, the flashed Linksys routers go a long way to solving microoutages. Not so sure about latency on the cable - I don't notice these since I don't do games.

What new technology, and where can we get info on this, as TCL are not telling me anything. Tonight I am dcing every 15mins.

I've had enough.

I want to change away from TC. Maybe even go with telecom or somthing. I don't care about speeds, i just don't want to DC every 10 seconds.

Is that post talking about the lag and DCs' people are having? Or is it about fixing internet speeds?

The post doesn't seem to be very specific.

Just talked to TC again (customer services) and they confirmed issues but cannot confirm a timetable to fix it. They said the only option is to hang in there or switch providers and they have given me a $10/month credit.

However, my internet is useless as it is.

As Bartender has noted on several times, the DC's can be fixed by installing a router (he suggests Linksys WRT54GL) with the DD-WRT firmware, I used to have constant micro-outages disconnects until I did that. Now I haven't had one since (3 weeks and counting).

Not sure though this would fix lag issues - while I might be experiencing them, since I don't play games, they are not really noticeable if all you do is surf the web, watch Youtube videos (!) and occasionally download torrents. And I have 4 users on all the time in the evening.

As I have said a number of times, I am prepared to lend my spare WRT54GL with DD-WRT pre-loaded if you don't believe me, $120 or so to reduce / remove dropouts and disconnects I think is money well spent. Not so sure about the lag but frequently use Skype and VoIP over VPN to my ex-employers VoIP server in Australia and US and never had a dropout or noticed any loss in voice quality even during peak hours in the evening. Yes if I started downloading a large file I would have QOS issues and get breakups of audio since there wasn't a way I could enable QOS on inbound connections but without anyone on the same line doing large downloads (regular surfing didn't cause problems) then I have always had faultless internet. I use a Linksys RV042, but my WRT54GL with DD-WRT never gave me problems prior to swapping it out.

The offer stands if you are interested (and live in Wellington as I don't want to post it to some random person, prefer to meet face to face), otherwise this conversation can continue on with bleating about poor internet from TCL.

It's not right, in fact it does p..s me off that you need to do this, but it works... and that has been posted by numerous people here.

Very interesting to know problems with Welly cable seem to be widespread. We have recently been having major problems with our connection pretty much dying between 7pm-11pm. I'm just wondering when people are talking about these
"mini-disconnections", is the modem actually restarting? Because we don't have that problem so much, the lights keep blinking on the modem but if I go to a cmd prompt and for example type "ping www.google.com -t", up to 80-90% of the packets will be lost. So the connection is not absolutely gone, and if I leave a web page open it will load eventually after 10 minutes or so, but is essentially useless.

We are not using a router, just wondering if the above fix would help us or is that only relevant to the modem actually disconnecting?

BarTender: Sorry, my bad, I was only quoting the DI-655, as that is what Buzzy had purchased ex-the US, and he has not experienced problems with it thus far.

If you are interested I can lend you my WRT54GL, and see how it goes for gaming. Personally I see little benefit of Gigabit networking over 100Meg, I don't often move 50MB+ files around my LAN, and when I do I tend to walk away from my computer and just leave it up to it.

Just my 2 cents worth, you shouldn't observe any sort of lag or ping loss when running through any router, unless it is under heavy load, and lets get real here, in wgtn the fastest downlink you can get is 10mb, and 2mb up, that shouldn't be pushing a COTS router over the limit... I would hope. This chart is quite a good link showing maximum throughput. And that's not even with the DD-WRT or Tomato firmware on the WRT54GL

Thanks for the generous offer -I appreciate it, but I don't think my problems have anything to do with the router. Having said that, I do think I had a problem with the ARP traffic and router IP address range, but I believe I've sorted that now.

I also agree that adding a router to the loop should add perhaps no more than 1-2 milliseconds delay -nothing that is at all significant in terms of dropping connections/packets etc.

Obviously (as i said) a router will risk dividing the internet bandwidth up amongst all devices connected, which definately could impact latency sensitive applications (like online games) if someone else is running utube/music downloads etc. And quite frankly, I think I've been a victim of that from time to time.

For me, the bottom line is, network protocols like udp cannot always function properly on Telstras cable network -but TCP based appilcations are completely fine. This demonstrates an underlying issue with performance stability that has nothing to do with your equipment, -and I am sure they are aware of it.

To be fair, TC, when running well, is brilliant, I only wish it didn't fluctuate the way is does -but then again, this is the internet we are talking about.

Matt, I am concerned that you may be wasting your money here. Unless bartender says otherwise, I don't see how adding a router to the loop (when you currently don't use one) is going to fix anything.

The only possibility I can see here is if the router can handle/manage issues that your computer is having with TC's connection.

From my experience, hooking the 360 directly to the modem has been a very stable (if impractical) solution. In any event, it certainly hasn't "created" any issues.

Yup exact same problem for me. Around the same time each also.

I remeber it was doing this about a year ago, it lasted for 2ish weeks. So i hope this problem will also sort itself out like it did last time.

Based on TCLs impending upgrade which is in the other thread noted, I suggest that most if not all basic domestic grade routers will work just fine once node segmentation has happened. So I would wait till that has happened before looking for a skip to place them.
