Does this mean they can turn 4g up so that it stops falling back to useless 3g all the time?

That comes down to how their handover is configured....

My understanding is that all three carriers currently plan their 4G coverage so it does not extend beyond the the existing range of 3G coverage. This is, again to my understanding, to ensure there are no areas where voice calls (especially emergency ones) are unable to be made due to lack fall back to 2G/3G coverage. This means all along the edges of network coverage there is always a certain amount of area with no 4G coverage at all. As a result phones are required to handover to 3G near the edge of coverage—regardless of how well their handover is configured...

mhm, their handover between 3g and LTE is also kinda very annoying. I'll often drive from home to work and be sitting on 3G by the time i get into the office because of it.

2D and Spark Both have far better design on their handovers.

I can't say i've poked the signaling logs enough to double check if VF are singleRAN or not though.

As someone who travels pretty long distances through rural patches, and Still depends on VF's network for Voice, Kinda bugs me alot... Still atleast my data isnt constantly dropped down ;)

I see Rural Connectivity Group have registered licenses for the new towers that are currently being built.

All appear to be 4G only which must mean Spark and 2degrees announcements won't be far off.

Surely VoLTE won't be restricted to certain models on these sites?

I did a lookup and found them easily on RSM's site. Very interested to see that RCG has registered the licenses using Spark's frequencies.

Well maybe, but because they have always said that 4g was crippled so that it matched the 3g voice footprint. If they have LTE voice, then no need to turn it down to that same inferior coverage.

Just this week was at the glenfield mall beside the milkshake place and my phone had 2/5 bars of H (not even H+) and nothing worked. Cycle airplane mode and it gets 1 bar of 4g and everything works fine, for a while till it gets kicked down to the crap H signal. More bars but no data.

4G is very resilient compared to 3G. When we were doing testing against my last employers network, 3G would be useless at -109db while 4G was easily pulling 5mbps Up and down at -120db. Very awesome stuff..(that means 1 bar LTE is still very fast and reliable!)

If I was to guess, 2D maybe the Telco to go for if you want an instant coverage increase once they turn on VoLTE, because they were always running their towers hot compared to VF and Spark which really messed with our Network.

@Kickass - Make sure you've got the carrier update - Go to Settings/General/About

Then make sure it's enabled - Go to Settings/Mobile/Mobile Data Options "Voice & Data".

Remember - the person you are calling has to have it set up as well.

I suspect if you want to get good quality speech you do.  Bit like G722 codec on a PBX. Unless the whole call path is G722  there was no point.

Classic, the 4g voice zone literally cuts off 2 houses before mine and pretty much circles completely around me and 3 of my neighbors.

I have to use a sure signal at home, middle of albany.. real kicker is if I walk to the top of my street I can see a cell tower.. not sure if its a vodafone one though..

That means having to go through the pain of not only using an iphone and but also being on the northshore!
