We don't currently have fiber, still on VDSL. We've been trying to get it but are having big issues (needed an OHUG and everything is going wrong). Should we just wait and jump on 5G when it comes? I guess I am asking, for a typical household its 5G perfectly adequate or is fiber better?

Fibre will always be better. 5G will be good if you can't get fibre - also expect it to cost more and have less allowance (as in don't expect unlimited plans on 5G).

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I think its pretty much guaranteed that its going to be a dog's breakfast global roaming/compatibility wise for at least a good few years....

There aren't that many choices, so far 5G handsets available overseas that I am aware of are:

Sammy S10 5G
LG V50 5G
Mi Mix 3 5G
Oneplus 7 Pro 5G
Huawei Mate 20 X 5G

Come December, we might even have Note 10 5G and Mate 30 Pro 5G

I guess Sammy and Huawei are safe bets to be offered by VF

Can't say I'm dying for 5G at this point - the latency drop is about the only bit that's interesting, otherwise 4G does everything I need it to do.

The only real excitement I can see is the likelihood that increased node density might lead to some increased quotas, but given the WiFi People's anti-5G stance, I don't expect that to happen any time soon.

To be honest though, I'm glad Vodafone is getting out ahead on this - I can't see much of a PR win these days with being the first to field the cancer towers of doom.

Vodafone are going to be using their 3.5GHz spectrum.

I'm not aware of any 5G devices so far not supporting the n78 (3.5GHz) band, so I'd go as far as saying everything 5G will work.

Datacaps are going to have to go through the roof if you believe some of the numbers being talked about for Self Drive Cars...

Intel are talking about each self driving car generating 4TB of data for every 90 minutes of driving, now if only 1% of that is offloaded to the cloud you are talking 27GB/hr per vehicle.....
