I don't know whether Vodafone are shifting customers from HFC to fibre. I'd be keen to move but the main reason we have remained on HFC is because we regularly get offered the cheapest deal available and that includes a free TV box.

I wonder if they did move you to fibre if there would be a sweetener included in the deal. Free Vodafone TV maybe?

We're paying $62 per month (after mobile discount) in Kapiti for VF HFC - which, from what I can gather, is at a discount to fibre cost around the rest of the country?

I'll will be a hassle to move over but, on the plus, great if they took down those thumping thick overhead cables.

It sounds to me that Voda lost confidence in their HFC network sometime ago. The 3 times I’ve looked at voda over the last few years (for broadband) there’s been no differentiation in cost between fibre and HFC. You would have thought Voda would capitalise on the fact they own their own network and sell broadband for much much cheaper than other RSPs do/can (we saw this with Telstra’s pricing vs Telecom back in the day) but it seems the overheads to run/upgrade the service outweighs having more people on your network.

But you could have got HFCMax for $73 instead of $93 with FibreMax? Understandably the upload is quite a bit slower compared to FibreMax

Yes thats what im paying in Stokes Valley with Docsis 3.1 HFC max.

With The cable network voda won't need to pay chorus the wholesale charge, so they probably were making more money off that then fibre max anyway IMO

I believe there is still network around Wellington and Auckland from First Media - Telecom's cable outing in the late 1990's, that's still in the ground untouched. If that hasn't been removed by now it probably won't be any time soon.

But yes, I'd be curious to see if Vodafone would remove the cable network as well, although I doubt it.

It's my understanding that contractually if Vodafone stop using the network it has to be removed from the poles. This would cost $$$$$

The First Media coax is still around in the Hutt and Whitby where it is underground. The overhead cables in Silverstream, Wadestown and Mt Victoria all got removed.

Cable network is underground in Johnsonville too

I've been a customer since the TelstraClear days, even my early T Box still has the TelstraClear logo on it.

I've stayed as it has been the cheapest option for getting Unlimited data, Landline and Sky (what is now basic, entertainment and sport)

All that costs me just over $170 a month, and having to get bits separately, you're looking at around $100 for Sky alone.

If the cable goes, probably won't stay with Vodafone.

Yup I was the same when i lived in an HFC area

I now pay $11.95 (iTalk), $89 (Bigpipe 100/100) $84.95 (Sky Basic, Sport, Entertainment) so $15 more than you pay now - the big advantage is that my phone line can be anywhere due to having full control and the SIP credentials and is not tied to my home when I am not there
