I am in Wellington, using TelstraClear cable modem service, 10 Mbps. It takes about 55 seconds for my browser to show the SMH homepage.

For comparison I can happily download an iTunes movie (1.4GB) in about 25 minutes on a bad day. Or Geekzone loads in about two seconds.

Similar results for me in Christchurch on TCL Cable 10Mbs.

Pinging ffxd.adbureau.net [122.248.157.38] with 32 bytes of data:

I just opened the smh homepage and it took about 1 minute to display the majority of the homepage, but took 3m10s until the browser showed "done".

I also tried brisbanetimes.com.au again, about 1 minute to load the majority. 3m20s until the browser showed done.

If I add diret.fairfax.com.au to my hosts file as suggested earlier in this thread, the time from "go" to "done" is about 9 seconds.

Hi, thanks again for the replies.

If you are running Windows there is a plugin for IE (written by AOL), that produces a waterfall graph of the page load. It would be very useful to me if you could install this plugin and load www.smh.com.au

Then in IE Click on Tools / AOL Pagetest.

Enter www.smh.com.au in your browser and wait for the page to load. Then in the pagetest window, click on File / Export Waterfall. If you could then email me this image file at my_forum_username at fairfaxdigital.com.au it will help me a lot.

Thanks for that. ffxd.adbureau.net would appear to not be happy at all over TelstraClear. I just tested on Vodafone(iHug) with no issues.

I am chasing this up and will let you and your readers know how I get on.

Any other data points from others appreciated.

Phew! I thought I was the only one having issues with smh.com.au. For me it seemed start about a week ago. Am finding the News Corp websites in Australia to be slow also.

I'm with Vodafone/iHug ADSL on the Waiatarua (Waitakere Ranges) exchange.

I tried it at work today (they use Compass wireless with a symetrical 10Mb/10Mb link) and it loaded instantly.

Edit: www.smh.com.au takes at least a minute to load, also testing other Australian sites:

www.nrl.com.au - instant
www.abc.net.au - slow
www.aph.gov.au - instant
www.news.com.au - slow

I note that all the slow ones are those that use Akamai.

We are still looking into this issue, including Akamai and our Ad serving provider.

If I could get a couple of traceroutes to direct.fairfax.com.au from TelstraClear Users that would be great.

My problems seemed to fix themselves late yesterday arvo, now having no problems with smh.com.au, news.com.au or abc.net.au.

Yes it's still timing out for me also. I would put the blame on Telstra's transparent proxy and the route appears to be fine.
