Last evening around 6pm I tried to watch a youTube item, every few seconds it would re load (approx every five seconds). This morning at 2am the same youTube item ran from start to finish without a break for 25 minutes. This is not unusual, it's virtually impossible for me to watch any youTube item in the busy period in the Kapiti area.
I've learnt to expect that to watch any youTube item with any degree of success it must be watched in the very early mornings. (Highspeed 10G).

Thank you for this - it is good to know. For what it is worth, here in Ngaio right now, YouTube is performing fine as perhaps some tweeks have been applied.

I'm on the TCL 20Gb Lightspeed Cable plan in Wellington. YouTube clips used to play reasonably well via TCL, but over the last several weeks YouTube video performance has degraded considerably. Loading delays are now frequent, with clips stopping to buffer every few seconds, both during business hours and at night, making them unwatchable whilst streaming.

I assumed one of the following issues applied:
1. My version of Firefox (3.5.4) has issues with playback of YouTube clips. (Seems unlikely as sometimes performance improves).
2. YouTube has performance issues (in which case other ISP users would have the same issues?)
3. Network issues between YouTube and TCL (but that would likely affect all users; and some users report no issues)
4. Unintentional network issues exist within TCL, OR
5. TCL may be intentionally de-prioritising YouTube traffic as a form of traffic shaping (perhaps someone from TCL can clarify if this occurs). If so, further tweaking is required to ensure that YouTube - one of the world's most popular sites - is usable for TCL customers.

It's good to see TCL is looking into this (as per recent post). Look forward to getting an update on your findings here - and would appreciate some clarification re: point #5.

I tried at 6.40am this morning (Cable Wellington) and it was terrible to the point I had to give up. I ran a speedtest which showed pretty good - bang on on 10 down, 2 up. Hopefully TCL can figure out what's happening. Sooner rather than later.

I tried Insane's recommendation

"Finally download another program called SpeedBit video accelerator, its like a download manager for youtube :)"

I now have no problems with slow U-tube or anything else as it crashed the wife's laptop, my wireless setup has become corutped and neither Firefox or Explorer will even start up.

Not wanting to rain on TelstraClear's parade.... but has anyone told the marketing department that youtube is unwatchable?

I don't usually do Youtube but needed to view some equipment reviews. The response is terrible (6:50pm) with videos stopping all the time. The only way I can view them is to pause and let the buffer fill up.

I've found the performace to be very hit and miss on youtube. I thought it had improved, but I think that was because I was watching during offpeak times. Tried again recently and its back to buffering every few seconds.

This thread has 2737 views now, so plenty of people are reading about the inability to watch streaming YouTube clips via TelstraClear's Internet service.

Someone above wrote that it's performing better today - but I tried to watch streaming video at multiple times today and it stopped to cache every few seconds on every occasion.

Olaf (TCL) said he'd keep us posted above, but it's been 9 days without an update. And the TCL service status webpage says there's "no known issues" - so doesn't seem to be a seriously priority.

Probably need to complain to TCL. Has anyone done that yet?

After reading you posting I decided to download and install SpeedBit to see if it did make a difference to YouTube.

So far, after having the software installed for about five days, I've not had the same problems as you did, but to be honest I can't see a difference in watching YouTube while SpeedBit is active (manual start and stop).

In fact, the last few day have seen a marked improvement in watching YouTube, don't know if TC has done anything or I've just been lucky.

All,

We implemented changes on our international caching infrastructure last Friday to attempt to address the YouTube issues. Would appreciate feedback on performance from the weekend and onwards.

Apologies for the delays. This has been a hard one to track down as it only affected some customers.
