Are any ISPs just reselling telecom thesedays? I thought the last was one that was reselling go large that stopped some time back since it was so crap it was ruining their name?

AFAIK all are providing their own connectivity rather than wholesaing telecom services now. Would love to know how it is tho.

Ok - by 'reselling' I don't mean reselling Xtra's broadband products.

My understanding is that Xnet are customers of Telecom (Wholesale?) and purchase a 'raw' bit stream service from them. They are totally dependent on the Telecom network and equipment until Xnet customer traffic hits the Xnet 'network'.

Some ISP's do have equipment in Telecom exchanges but I don't think Xnet is one of these.

Anyone , please feel free to correct any misunderstandings I may have.

Orcon and Vodafone made a big deal about apparently provisioning their backhaul from their LLU equipment in the exchanges to the ISP at a lower contention ratio than Telecom wholesale. I've heard 25:1. 50:1, 100:, 1000:1 thrown about but who knows for sure not me...

Since neither they nor Telecom disclose what the contention ratios are publicly we can only guess.

If you are on an old crowded exchange I guess it could be congestion/contention on the backhaul bandwidth from the exchange to the ISP.

.. but it could also be a problem with the ISP's handover links, the ISP's internal network or their international bandwidth.

You can either sell what telecom sell and get a discount on it, which is wholesaled, or you can get a port terminated with your PPP server from them and provide your international yourself etc.

All the ISPs seem to do the second option since the profit is higher, at least we are a far way from the dark days of ISPs getting $10 and telecom putting everything else on your telecom account....

From what I have read it appears that both Orcon, Telstraclear & Vodafone have their own equipment in the various cabinets. Having made the decision to move from Xnet, I have perused the Forums & have noted that there have been a number of people who have experienced speed problems with both Orcon & Telstraclear but Vodafone appears to have a clean bill of health. Two of my work colleagues are with Vodafone on their red network & have also advised that their download speeds are excellent, that the slowdown during the rush hours is minimal & they also highly recommend Vodafone.
So, the decision has been made & I am moving to Vodafone.
Once the changeover has been done & I have been on their network for a few weeks, I shall post my findings for your information.

1920x1080p: Perhaps the commerce commission should make it law that ISP's have to publish speedtest.net type statistics for all areas they service (on either a suburb or exchange basis) for 3 samples a day midnight, morning and evening.

Perhaps the commerce commission should re think their 32kbps per user decision. That was made several years ago when the fastest plan was 3.5Mbps and people only used 2-3GB per month.

Now with ADSL2+ and soon VDSL, and much more data being consumed, that rate is not enough.
