PARADOXSM: The official network activations date (silent launch) is 8th all going to plan though depending on logistics reasons this might be pushed another week, it looks like somone lucky has got it working already!
Bloomberg says 10th, according to a VFNZ press e-mail.

I'd say get ready for some pretty heavy marketing in terms of one off specials and phone/connection combo deals. Think $10 Text, but bigger.....

Just what the doctor ordered I'd say.

After hearing a few things this morning since most stuff is no longer under wraps I suspect Telecom may regret a few of the comments they made last week about taking the lead over Vodafone. While Telecom may have some cool features when it launches on Wednesday there is no dusputing what network is suddenly going to be cool again... $10 txt is nothing and a few of the new handsets rock. Personally I'd be holding off buying a phone for a few months yet.. but probably won't resist the temptation1

Certainly - All of Telecom's 3G phones are junk... without exception. All ugly flip-phones with minimalist specs. That said, Vodafone's initial 3G offerings aren't much cop either. Like you say, hold off for a few months, but then miss out on all of the early fun.... and of course the status of showing it off to your friends who haven't upgraded yet ;o)
Also, not much point having free videoconferencing yet - there will be little to no saturation of these handsets until at least xmas when the 10 new ones are due for release.
So who are you going to call..... Ghostbusters?

I haven't heard exact plan details yet but apparently we won't be seeing significant changes in data rates. That peeves me off when Voda will gladly give you plenty of bandwidth hungry stuff for free for @ launch but not cheap(er) internet access. Why not at least offer free data weekends and get people hooked?

Telecom is far from junk, they did have a product in the market place that was great. While 3GSM doesn't offer the same data speed as EV-DO does I personally believe the whole new 3G & 3G Live! offering is going to do to Telecom's current offering what Telecom's 3G did to Voda's GSM network.

sbiddle - didn't mean Telecom as a whole and as a network infrastructure was junk - I was referring only to their 3G handsets. A year on, and they still only have a handful. All ugly, all simplistic. The only semi decent one out there is the 5600, and only then because it has a 1G memory. Doesn't make it a good phone though.... In several areas it is left wanting....

You can't please everyone... I really like my Sanyo 7400, does everything I need well enough and I prefer flip phones plus my T3G card is excellent.

Video calling will only work where there is UMTS coverage, no good having mates to vid call if you aint got coverage....

Obviously $10 Text really sucks - last quarter Telecom 75,000 vs Voda 38,000 net connects... not popular at all.

I stayed out of this post because it is related to Voda 3G but if you are going bag Telecom then what the hell I will add my bit!!!

Like I said - it's just the phones... Nothing personal... except my preference.
I use Telecom personally, but am not a fan of the 3G handsets.
Will be getting myself a voda one for the simple fact the handsets are better. Cooler, sleeker, more functional ... ok, so the current 3G voda offerings are about as pretty as a Lada.... but still...

Does anyone here listen to Newstalk ZB? I caught the tail end of them talking about Vodafone 3G and I'm pretty sure they would have said when its going to be launched but I had to go into the supermarket, would have been some good info there i reckon, hopefully someone heard it.

I am not sure whether $10 text is actually much of an influence any longer. I did hear (and would be interested to know some real stats if anybody has them) that the number of customers using the $10 cap as a % has not increased over the past year. This would suggest that while people are moving to Telecom or getting a Telecom phone they're not necessarily doing it just because of $10 TXT. There are hundreds of '000s of customers on both networks who have never sent a TXT and have no incentive to! Theresa Gattung also claimed last week 30% of people have 2 phones, both companies need to be sitting down and working out why. I know teenagers who use $10 TXT but refuse to make any voice calls with Telecom because they are all rounded up to the next minute so they cost too much. They carry around a 2nd Vodafone mobile just to make voice calls and of course get unlimited txt on weekends.
