Not to put it on you, but more security on you phone itself? I have numerous locks on my cell, and it defaults to lock after 1min of inactivity, or put on charge, and requires 2 different codes if turned off. 

I was using one of those old Motorolla Razr's so not sure what security options I had. I definitely have my iphone locked down though. Good point though.

if you have registered the voda number under your name, should it show as such at the account level?

On prepay they only have your name if you register online as far as I am aware and even then you can use any name you wish.

I got the BB version of pattern lock. Good extra layer of protection. And a change from numerical pass codes. 

Have a look at all security settings on your device, timeouts, lock during charge etc..

I hope someone at Vodafone has done their best to trace the person responsible using things like the method of payment for the new SIM and possible security footage from the store etc and passed the info to the Police.

+1. As well as cell site info, it shouldn't be too hard to track down I reckon...

If this was really a Vodafone problem I doubt we will ever see anything coming from the company. They would never publicly admit a security breach with such implications.

My guess is that if the OP did get that call with a compensation offer he was also asked to stay quiet from now on.

But that's a guess, and we all love conspiracy theories...

A friend had someone try this on a while back, apparently the number they got on a prepay pack used to be someone elses a long time ago, and they wanted it back. Thankfully they seemed to have an IQ well below average so they had no success. Their texting abuse about wanting their number back didnt help them out either.

Yes, like when Ben Gracewood was asked to take down his pictures from the famous HTC Magic party, and after second thought he just posted them back... So there's a precedent:


I took them down because Vodafone PR offered a quid-pro-quo, that I quite incorrectly accepted. I apologise wholeheartedly to my readers. It’s not good enough. It won’t happen again. If there is a next time, I will thoroughly question PR motives before complying.

My take on this (and I say this often)... No large company is perfect. They don't want to be evil though because companies don't have its own will. But except for when leadership is bad (it happens) most companies will not be in the business of being bad.

People in these companies are not bad either. They may have some good intentions and do some wrong stuff, but it doesn't mean they are essentially bad.

Also communications break down. People in the front lines most of the times have poor support systems so if you call help desk they might even take a note but it get lost under the amount of work. They don't have a good system to support their needs and the leaders don't want to put money into the call centre support - it happens.

So, essentially, I think all companies will have problems at some point because of small disconnections between one group and another. Lack of communications, no direct line, etc.

It's all part of the basic theory of administration. But again, in those days, how many GM, MD, CEOs actually came from a business school, instead of coming from marketing, financial or technical departments?
