What speed to you get from this site during peak time with Xnet?
http://zeus.geek.nz/ (speed test is expired use the 300mb http download at the bottom)

Here's one at 5:00pm, which I am happy with:

which is 2.7Mb/s.  This I can live with.

I'll post the peak results at...peak!

...and 45 minutes later, at 5:45:

Which equates to 240Kb/s (and dropping).  This is what I contend with.  What choice do I have?  Over 3 hours for a 345MB file!  I need to download Linux ISOs.  Even posting here was painful!

I'm getting around 980kBps for that same file. I'm in Pakuranga, Auckland and 3.5km from the exchange. No cabinets. Sync around 8 to 10 Mbps. No issues with speed.

You can never have enough Volvos!

Thanks! Undecided

What I wouldn't give for those speeds.  Personally I've been ignored by Xnet one too many times.  I no longer care if they are blaming Telecom, I HAVE to do something.  This is costing me a fortune through lost work.

Without taking this too personally, Xnet customer service SUX!  I've even considered going to Telecom!  Pah!  There, I said it!  That's how annoyed with Xnet I am!

Good luck - I'd be just as annoyed as you are in your position and also be considering alternatives.

You can only hope that an ISP change will result in improved speeds, but I hope you're prepared that it very well may not, and that another ISP's tech support may also be worse.

Let us know how you get on, either way!

Thanks, and yes I understand that.  Hard to imagine worse tech support...apart from Telecom/Vodafone naturally!

I'll be asking tough questions of the next ISP prior to signing.  I will NOT be going with a company charging disconnect fees (e.g. Snap rate high in customer satisfaction, but charge a $99 disconnect if you terminate before 12 months.  Not risking 12 months!)

The file you are getting is national, here are my stats from last night I di this when you posted last night so I could add them this morning, your issue appears to have nothing to do with our network, we don't treat Niel, You or even myself any different if we are getting decent  speeds and yours drops to this there is something majorly wrong in the local area network or dare I say it even your own setup.

Yeah slow national really points the finger at Telecom wholesale, perhaps the backhaul from the Red Beach exchange or whatever is after that before hand over to Xnet (local/regional aggregation I guess) is overloaded.

@JoeCool
Do you know your neighbours? or have friends in the same area/connected to the same exchange? I would check what speed they are getting in peak time to try and confirm it's an exchange backhaul issue rather than just something specific to you or Xnet.

In defence of Xnet all they can do it log these sort of issues with Telecom and eventually Telecom will get around to resolving them.

However it does sound like their helpdesk could have given you clearer answers and better service.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you - or at least they used to be.  I ended up with XNet due to speed issues with Xtra, and Xnet sorted them out within a week.

In this case I logged a case & it got closed again almost immediately.  When I queried it XNet said Telecom had said there was no congestion on the exchange.

Well, I know it's not my network, Telecom say it's not theirs, and XNet are just ignoring me...  So.

Open to other suggestions, believe me.  At present I'm looking at plans for a huge mast to hang an antennae for wireless Undecided

To be fair, this is imposed by Telecom Wholesale and passed onto you by your ISP.

Hmmm. Armed with all the stats over the last month FINALLY someone at XNet admintted there is a congestion issue (Duh! It's pretty obvious).

We'll see what happens now...

Given you speed test results you do appear to be affected by something.  You're on new equipment so it shouldn't be your local exchange, a prior fault logged showed no congestion on the node.   Another fault has been re-logged with new speed test data - this may come back with the same result.

It could be worthwhile trying the following,  turning the modem on and off then running a speed test as soon as it re-connects.  Trying to isolate the ADSL modem, remove anything plugged into it bar one computer.  If you have more than one PC, try a speed test on both of them when isolated.  Make sure your computer is directly connected (not through wireless or your SPA2102) to your ADSL modem via ethernet.

It would be interesting to know the results from the above.

Just had this in from Telecom Wholesale ;

This one should be resolved tonight, we have a problem with the RAN this customers ISAM is connected to, an emergency change has been put through for tonight.

This customer should see a big improvement from Tomorrow , will confirm with you when its done.

I'll post here when I can confirm the issue is resolved.

Needless to say, I'm extatic!  Thanks to teh two guys at Xnet who finally took me seriously, and Cameronn who follwed it up.

At this rate, I'll happily stay right where I am.
