Personally I think what a neighbor does with their property is their business, if they want to put up a windsock on a pole thats 15 meters high, that's fine, though if it's going to kill me then I may have something to say about it. Because cell towers have not yet proven to kill us, though some poeple may say it does cause radiation I'd be fine with it.

I get bad signal for both vodafone and telecom at home, being on naked DSL I dont use a home phone so I count on my cellphone, so I'd welcome a new cell tower in my area.

If perhaps I had full signal from a cellphone tower, I'd still welcome another, overlapping signals is always a good thing incase one tower goes down, plus it adds capacity for emergencies or data. If too many people were connected to the same site as me, there is the chance my data would be slow or my cellphone calls wouldn't terminate. Another good reason to have many towers is for 111 calls. If you have more towers, you have more chance of making the call and it actually getting through.

Lucky we have a process such as resource concent, at least the public gets a vote on the matter, but personally if a tower went up down the road from me, I'd welcome the idea, we live in a world full of technology and I'd rather have access than not have access.

I guess you could use the example, my neighbor has a corvette which he starts up every weekend and either goes for a drive or runs it for a while, the rich petrol fumes smell great but also sometimes flood my house, plus it's noisy... Well it's their choice, they have it on their property and what they do in their bubble doesn't concern me... I run the motor of my boat after a good relaxing day fishing and leave it running for about 5-10 mins making a decent noise, they don't complain. Silly examples but worth noting.

I'm no engineer but I remember reading an aricle a while back (so things may have chaned now) that discussed how even if the radiation from celltowers was bad for you, having fewer cell towers is actualy worse.

an area that would normally be covered by, say, 6 towers of strength A would nw require 2 towers of strength A x 10, to achiebve similar coverage, meaning vastly increased levels of radiation, not less.
(to do with the inverse square law as mentioned earlier in this thread)

IOW more cell towers = better for you.

also, when I was in Dubai I noticed these slightly odd looking palm trees on the palm island. turns out they are cell towers. pretty cool huh

xpd: Post from my blog back in Feb...

"Bit (wife) made a comment today that someone told her that they wouldnt use 2Degrees mobile because theyre installing cell towers.

How do you think your current Vodafone/Telecom mobile works ?

OK, so some of the sites that 2D have chosen for cell towers could have been discussed with the locals first but noone seemed to bitch when Vodafone/Telecom put theirs up...

Until someone can prove 100% that cell towers can have adverse affects to the human body/mind, then towers will continue to be put into place regardless of who owns them and what the common rate payer says.."

Priceless! Some people have no idea how things work.
Cellsite (cell towers) always use to be in places far away from homes or at least not in your back yard.
I guess what it comes down to is people want to be able to have reception all the time and access to their facebook account on their phone! :S

Although some of the 2degrees towers I've seen have been painted in a way that they some what blend in with the natural colours of the bush etc. There is one on the North Shore in Auckland, and I didn't notice it for months and apparently it's been there for months..

I guess location is everything! Maybe just not in your backyard...

No problem with VF doing that.  May look a little out of place in Wainuiomata though :P
I have seen similar on the Gold Coast in ozzie.

Except when you get 3 towers side by side all different types of fake tree looking nothing like the real bush.

They use to have one like this in Manukau. Can't remember if it's still there?

ZollyMonsta:

You can state the 'Not In My Neighbourhood' phrase till you're blue in the face.  Either way anybody who owns a home doesn't want one of these things near them.

I did not start this thread for you to start a personal attack.

Regardless of wether it improves reception quality.  The issue here isn't that it's there, the issue is mainly it is NOTICEABLE.  There are mocked up photos of this site in the proposal and it stands out like a sore thumb.

I have no problem with them. I would gladly rent the back yard for a site if it meant I got some $$$ from them and great coverage.

Also, imagine if this crazy opposition to infrastructure happened when electricity was new, or television.

Noone would let them build that tower on the waitaks these days, so we would have no dvb-t service these days like we do if it was not already there.

Hell, even electricity has had problems with the waikato farmers being dicks about the new cable run that is well overdue.

I have on my desk two letters to the editor from a small town in New Zealand.

The first demands to know why phone companies insist on putting up towers, why they're allowed and how dare they and listing 100 names of people opposed to this tower going up.

Next to it is a letter demanding to know why there's no cellphone coverage at the local school, don't cellphone companies care about their customers, how dare they not listen and listing 100 names of people demanding better coverage.

Paul

Any names feature on both lists?

Well that's you and you're allowed to think that/do that if you wish.  We don't want it near us.
We are selling our selling our home and there is still people who would rather not buy a property near a cellphone tower.  The market is bad enough as it is without an added bad element to the mix.
