Grantis:A well balanced post & a very good point to bring up about how a NEW customer is defined, especially in Telecom's case as they don't utilise SIM cards. It would be interesting to know how it all really works.

Vodafone define their customer base on their number of active connections - ie contract customers + any SIM card that is active. So they could well have a large number of prepay connections that are still valid (ie haven't reached their 1yr cutoff in which case they will be diconnected).

I believe Telecom count their customer numbers in exactly the same way. I know a few years ago when things were going very poorly for them they actually stopped disconnecting unused prepay connections simply to boost their customer numbers! It was one of the quarters when they got something like 20000 new customers and I heard at the time that if they had not made the decision to keep those prepay accounts live they would have actually lost customers in the quarter.

I understand that Vodafone NZ made an adjustment to their figures for the September Quarter for that very reason (disconnected customers). This was published in the NZ Herald, but I can't find the article.

With regards to Telecom & how they didn't disconnect their Prepay customers a few years back, if that's true then, rofl.

sbiddle:
Telecom have different dates for their result announcements and AGM's. From their website their 2nd Quarter results are being announced on the 2nd Feb.

Aha, thanks for that.

Do vodafone disconnect prepays if not used within 12 months? I thought you lost credit but the number was still connected.

I understand that you must have credit on your account to keep it "active", if not used in a 12 month period, of which the minimum amount is $20. If you don't then your connection to the Vodafone network, will be "disconnected".

This is detailed in the Terms & Conditions if you purchase a Pre Pay mobile.

They tend to keep them active then every so often delete everything that has been inactive for x period of time - as mentioned above they did this in September.

Grantis - you are as balanced as a one legged man on a unicycle. Get over yourself.

We will wait for the Telecom result early Feb and then we will see for sure if 68,000 new connects is a steller performance or not.

Jama: No wonder they are laying off 20 managers. I guess they are 'non performing' managers.
I didn't see the article, but I think you are talking about "Telco to cull senior staff", published on NBR?

Althought I can't determine where this story came from, I heard from Vodafone New Zealand, and they tell me this is not what's happening.

So let's treat this as a rumour please...

I wasn't getting personal, but you are. I was merely pointing out that Telecom are also feeling the pinch at the moment, which you seem to be completely oblivious too.

It would be nice if we could have debate without the Ad Hominem tactics.

Attack the argument not the person!

(was referring to both anti/pro voda posts, so not targetting one person)
