Everything is on it's way up now.

@freitasm quite a bit runs through the APE, mobile wasn't affected, it was just Mobile Data, you could still make emergency calls and generally use the phone. Just quite a few customers / ISP's (Including us) that peer via the APE had a bit of downtime, nothing bad. With Telecom it was the whole RNC's that failed, which meant the whole mobile network. This wasn't the case.

freitasm: It just goes to show, comparing to Telecom XT outages (why not?), that those telcos seem to have a single point of failure.

Vodafone's single point of failure seems to be their reliance in one path to Sky Tower...

It all makes it really awkward for Vodafone, who made a point of calling themselves a reliable network, doesn't it?

Don't really think there's a comparison to be had there. It was a minor (as in relatively short) ISP outage. Hell, every ISP has those and reasonably frequently too.

I didn't notice any issues with making and receiving calls via my Vodafone outage so this wasn't really a mobile outage as per the comparison to XT.

*sigh* I just want my emails to work more than they don't at the moment. Maybe I should be resetting my modem.

It is however a lot easier to backup an internet connection than an RNC, it all comes down to the old saying "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" or in other words just because you didn't break this time it might be you next time.

No network is perfect, but the main thing is all those who did have outages learn from this in case so if Skytower which is a major transmission site for most carriers or APE go down for a long period of time we don't have this happen again.

We're not quite comparing apples are we here? Data outage Vs Voice Outage?

Internal Core Network Failures (RNC's) Vs External Gateway failures which affect multiple providers?

Of course not. But I did find it rich Vodafone going out of their way to label themselves as "the reliable network" when the other network was down.

It doesn't matter it affected external gateways. It still shows that a single point failure can bring data communications down. What if Sky Tower really had a major communications breakdown? Does Vodafone have alternative gateways? Did these alternative gateways kick in? If not, why not?

Since we are moving more and more to a connected world, mobile data is as important as mobile voice.

And we are talking about companies that want to run the communications infrastructure in this country. so nothing is too small in this context.

ActiveMatrix: Sorry to sound like a Noob but what's APE? (Auckland Pairing Exchange at a guess?)

Auckland Peering Exchange. Where ISP's exchange traffic with each other. It's basically a Layer2 Ethernet Segment. You get an IP Address out of the APE /24 and you can talk to the other's on the same LAN to swap traffic.

www.ape.net.nz for all the information you'd never want about it :)

Currently the site seems to be down. Which is strange, because APE peering isn't down (at least, all the people we peer with stayed up just fine)

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

It's back up now. In fact, everything appears to be back up (or in the process of booting up again)

I can understand your perspective Maurico, you saw Vodafone bring an offer to target those who were dissatisafied with the service that you obviously are not. I guess it all depends on what you class as reliable?

an hour outage which was caused by a power surge/spike Vs multiple outages for multiple hours. I dont think it benefits this post trying to compare the two personally, as I think they are far different.

have you checked your sources re: fire at skytower?

from the stuff article
"Sky City spokesman Brodie Stewart said there had been a power surge in one of their power plants around 1pm and fire service units from the city and Balmoral attended.
He said there was no fire and no one was trapped."

Isn't Vodafone the "reliable" network hmmm? Gotta love the excuses that it's "an hour outage".

We lost:
- Internet with ICONZ through Araneo
- Backups vodafone data sticks
- International connecitity at home via Xnet

So did the APE stay online during the outage? I couldn't get out on the APE (but probably related to Araneo/Vodafone more than anything) nor was there any international.

CYaBro: Is it the whole country or just up north?
Can't access the main Vodafone website at all and all our clients that use Vodafone as their ISP have dropped off the internet!

Edit: I'm in Whangarei

So it wasn't just me (North Shore). I re-booted the phone, just in case...and I still couldn't get on the Net.

It's OK now, though: 15:46

They generally are. They came back pretty quick from it.
