freitasm: It just goes to show, comparing to Telecom XT outages (why not?), that those telcos seem to have a single point of failure.
Vodafone's single point of failure seems to be their reliance in one path to Sky Tower...
It all makes it really awkward for Vodafone, who made a point of calling themselves a reliable network, doesn't it?

Don't really think there's a comparison to be had there. It was a minor (as in relatively short) ISP outage. Hell, every ISP has those and reasonably frequently too.
I didn't notice any issues with making and receiving calls via my Vodafone outage so this wasn't really a mobile outage as per the comparison to XT.
Any posts are personal comments and not that of my employer

We're not quite comparing apples are we here? Data outage Vs Voice Outage?
Internal Core Network Failures (RNC's) Vs External Gateway failures which affect multiple providers?

ActiveMatrix: Sorry to sound like a Noob but what's APE? (Auckland Pairing Exchange at a guess?)
Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.
OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!
muppet:ActiveMatrix: Sorry to sound like a Noob but what's APE? (Auckland Pairing Exchange at a guess?)
Auckland Peering Exchange. Where ISP's exchange traffic with each other. It's basically a Layer2 Ethernet Segment. You get an IP Address out of the APE /24 and you can talk to the other's on the same LAN to swap traffic.
www.ape.net.nz for all the information you'd never want about it :)
Currently the site seems to be down. Which is strange, because APE peering isn't down (at least, all the people we peer with stayed up just fine)

Of course not. But I did find it rich Vodafone going out of their way to label themselves as "the reliable network" when the other network was down.
It doesn't matter it affected external gateways. It still shows that a single point failure can bring data communications down. What if Sky Tower really had a major communications breakdown? Does Vodafone have alternative gateways? Did these alternative gateways kick in? If not, why not?
Since we are moving more and more to a connected world, mobile data is as important as mobile voice.
And we are talking about companies that want to run the communications infrastructure in this country. so nothing is too small in this context.
juha: Did a quick story about it for ITnews.
Hoping to have further details soon...

CYaBro: Is it the whole country or just up north?
Can't access the main Vodafone website at all and all our clients that use Vodafone as their ISP have dropped off the internet!
Edit: I'm in Whangarei

aperfectcircle: Isn't Vodafone the "reliable" network hmmm? Gotta love the excuses that it's "an hour outage".
