After seeing the numbers you guys were getting I decided to check out the speed I was getting. I was getting about 7-8Mbps.

I quickly discovered if I remove my old 8 year old D-link 10/100 broadband router, and connect my PC directly to my cable modem, then I'd get 15Mbps. Wow. Confirmed this much faster speed was useable to me in the real world (by downloading a big file from easynews). Hmm... I have to get this speed all the time.

So, I think I'm about to replace my old route with a newer router. Anyone care to recommend a router? I dont need wireless on this router, so this feature will be disabled if present. I'm basically after 4 10/100/1000 ports, plus extra port for WAN, decent firewall and configuration options, and not going to slow things down horrendously like my old D-link.

Get a cheap nettop and install any OS of your choice and run it as a router.

I'd rather not use computer for this task. Buying a nettop would also be an expensive way of going about it, and wouldnt give me the 4+1 UTP ports without extra hardware anyway. I'd rather just buy a small cheap purpose built router.

I'm after recommendations so that I dont go buy one then find the same big speed drop as my D-link.

Hey, does anyone know when we get our allowance pushed up to the new level? Is that on our next rollover? Mine isn't till the 17th

If so would canceling my account and re-signing today be a better option?

Check the usage page.  My billing period is until the 25th and they've bumped up my allowance from 20 to 40G already.

Hmm, maybe I just haven't checked in a long time but it's nice to see that I can get 15Mbit to every Speedtest server in AU except Perth, as I recall it always being somewhat less than 10Mbit for anything other than the occasional Sydney test.

Also nice to be getting slightly > 15Mbit down and > 2Mbit up (got 15.31 from Tauranga once) sometimes.
