For what it's worth, I've run out of time. :-( (Signed up on Wednesday, heard on Thursday that I need to seriously update two conference papers, supposedly by Friday 4th + 'normal' work.) In the meantime, I've left the Downers setup HG659 doing routing, disabled the WAN interface on my trusty pfSence router, changed DHCP to point the default gateway to the HG659, and left the pfSense happily doing DNS and DHCP till I have time to sort a better router (probably RB3011 - https://www.gowifi.co.nz/specs/RB3011-RM-151123112912.pdf).
Tried to configure port forwarding on the HG659, but it doesn't seem to work so far.

Apparently $4.99 is the standard charge for a static IP address, so if you managed to get one without paying for it then you've done well. The chap I spoke to said he couldn't give it to me for free, but he could give me a $10 a month discount - go figure...

I think I'll just wait and see if the address changes again. I have a DDNS service set up in the meantime just in case.

set it to DHCP and then set VLAN 10 up and you're good to go.

It will be interesting to see how you go performance wise. From memory the R7000 is also a broadcom chipset

But don't make the mistake I did with leaving the HG659 in the chain. :-)

When you say leave the hg659 out of th chain - what do you mean. Is it different from my current cable connection where my cable modem plugs into my router (r8000)?

I misread the conversations on here and went from cable modem, to VF supplied HG659, to my R7000 router. While this does work, it's a bit overkill. But taking the HG659 out and setting VLAN tagging on worked well.

Oh my!

FibreXmaX went in this morning. Have spent the last three hours tweaking (admittedly, 2.5 hours of that was because of my own boneheaded mistake). The above was the fastest I was able to get. This was using the supplied Huawei HG659 with wireless turned off on the router and Windows Defender turned off on my notebook. This was also via a USB 3 gigabit network adapter so I suspect could have gone even slightly faster.

However, I have noticed significant variation with Speedtest results. I assume the servers are getting *slammed*.

This was the best HG659 result with Windows Defender on I was able to get:

But exact same setup a couple of hours later:

Swapping out the Huawei for my Netgear Nighthawk (factory reset):

Nighthawk again, this time with CTF enabled:

And finally, Nighthawk restored back to my previous config with a few other bits and pieces enabled:

In the immortal words of Groundskeeper Willie, "Ach, my beauty! Were it not a violation of God's law, I'd make you me wife!" Pretty stoked about both the connection and the fact that the Nighthawk seems up to the task of routing a gigabit connection.

And for some reason Speedtest thinks that I am in Auckland with an ISP called ISGL (no idea. Seems to be a web hosting company). I did pay extra for the static IP and it might be that this is from their pool or something.

Unless something has changed recently, Apple products don't have the option for VLAN tagging. You'd either need to use the HG659 in bridge mode, or follow @sbiddle's instructions for using a Mikrotik Switch to do the VLAN tagging for you.

Yeah, really frustrating.

I presume the deployment model for UFB is similar to that used in other countries, and that they are employing vlan tagging as well.... it would be great if apple would support this, but i can't see them changing the software to support kit that 3-7 years old

Apple are getting really poor with their upgrade & support cycles for non iphone kit.

For consistency with UFB, and for QoS. The 802.1p priority bits in the Ethernet header are only present in tagged frames. If you want to offer QoS (such as for VoIP, or indeed anything else) then you need tagged frames.

Not as frustrating as not being able to order it. I think this is a partial rollout even though I am close to 100% sure my node has been upgraded. I have asked Mike for confirmation to see if this is the case.

Cool. This is what I am looking for in terms of "what can I do"...

So to make use of HG659 in bridge mode, is there an instruction of how to achieve this - bear in mind, my area isn't FibreX yet... but I want to know the prep work I can do ahead of the availability.

Does anyone know if the ping is still higher on Cable than on UFB and the like? From Wellington the ping to Sydney was 40+ when I had Cable vs ~35 on DSL and UFB.
