@dancorn, what @olof says re multiroom is correct, but noting:

1. The Multiroom function on vtv.nz won't be available for another 2-3 more weeks

2. Once linked, all boxes can record and access the same recordings from the 500hours of cloud storage for $25/mth per box.   Note that this is significantly different to Sky's MySky multiroom which costs $40/mth for each extra regular MySky and $45/mth for each extra  MySky+ box.

Another new user here and overall a good positive experience so far.
Setup was quick and easy.
The odd user interface issue as covered by others here but nothing major and good to hear Vodafone are working on improvements.
I have an ethernet connection to the unit and quality is excellent.
There seems to be a few seconds of SD picture as the stream is established then decent HD.

I notice once a programme has aired you can no longer record, even though it's still available in the 3 day buffer.
There may be some licensing issues around this, but I would have thought if recording is enabled, it should be available pre and post broadcast.
Any chance this will become available in the future?

Cheers

Thanks, and you're correct about recording.  Unfortunately, while technically possible, being able to "record" after the live event has aired is unlikely to be available in the foreseeable future.  The only reason the content providers agree to Cloud PVR functions is that we can point out that we are simply replicating how end users are allowed to record themselves, and cloud PVR arguably gives the studios more comfort about the security of their content.  However, being able to record a live stream after the live event just isn't possible using the standard tuner+hard disk PVRs and so the content providers don't consider this something they need to allow.

Correct, this is because VodafoneTV is an IP-only service using adaptive bitrate streaming (for resiliency). For STB the bitrate starts at 800kbps, but negotiates up to full 1080p HD within a couple of seconds.

Another fun fact, we use 25fps for most channels, but use 50fps for channels that often carry sport (TV1, TV3, Prime, Duke, all SKY Sport channels, ...). This allows for the best picture quality for fast moving sport.

@sansom Just a thought to get around the Cloud PVR restrictions - why not enable the USB port to accept a flash drive / external hard drive and allow local recording of shows that don't allow Cloud PVR's to record? Gets around the whole restriction.

No, that would enable a badly-motivated person - not you, of course ;) - to make a copy of the broadcast content and distribute it however they like.

If it's in the "Cloud PVR" - presumably encrypted - only the licensed user should be able to retrieve it and stream it: much less opportunity to pirate it.

Can't just put Sky on one box only (i.e Sky recordings available on one box only)

Just if have to pay $25 plus Sky fees on top starting to find price silly, was considering maybe second box to save unplugging HDMI inputs all the time.

I don't need to have Sky on it so end of day if they want to price themselves out of market, just something have to consider if get second box.

Amazon and Netflix don't charge $25 extra if on more then one TV.

Most 4K channels available to providers in our region are pretty much "filler content"

FTV 4K
Fashion One
4k Universe

etc fine as a demo of the tech but of little value

If someone gets a second box then they will be able to put Sky on both boxes - the capability to do this is coming in about 3 weeks.  When the VTV multiroom feature is launched you will be able to have multiple boxes with Sky and with cloud recordings available and shared on all boxes.

Amazon and Netflix don't charge $25 extra if on more then one TV.

The $25/mth per box is the only extra cost for adding a Sky multiroom box.  So if you're already paying for Starter ($25.99) + Entertainment ($25.50) + Sport ($31.99) + SoHo (free with Ent + Sport) on one box ($83.48 total), you then pay an extra $25 (30% more) to add another box to watch any of this content on either of the 2 boxes.  This is very similar to Sky's pricing (except Sky charge more if the extra box offers recordings).

If Vodafone or Sky didn't have a charging mechanism for extra boxes, or place limits on how many boxes, then everyone would simply share one master account with all the Sky content available on many boxes.  Amazon and Netflix also have limits, but based on the number of concurrent streams rather than devices that have access.

So if I get a second box, and only want to put Sky on one box, better to set it up under different Email address.

Could always limit box's to one IP address at a time (ie. both box's have to have same IP when being used together) to make sure not being used in multiple locations?

Also if people share box's they would have to deal with each others recordings which could get inconvenient. Someone deletes something that someone else hasn't watched.

Other then that I don't watch sport, but if put SoHo on or something it's almost doubling the cost.

Yep if people share they lose revenue but they also do if people don't sign up.

Edit It's the same as Sky's multi room offering, but in this case who's paid for the second box? Sky has no second box to provide/maintain.

@BlackHand If you are still having problems with pairing your remote, Vodafone have managed to resolve my issue.  It was environmental and turned out that my Apple TV 4 HD and Mac Mini 2012 (the bluetooth on them) that were sitting close to the VFTV were causing interference.  Once these were turned off and the VFTV remote reset and the VFTV box power cycled it automatically paired no problems.

While they couldn't recreate the issue I was having in their office they were able to do so with their own box when they came out to troubleshoot it.

Is the TVNZ 1 audio slightly out of sync? I have the VTV plugged into the TV which then outputs audio to my soundbar. I might be dreaming this up but when watching One News I get the feeling its ever so slightly out of sync.

I have been watching TVNZ 1 here this evening, audio direct into TV via HDMI and I’ve not noticed any issues.
