+1 I'm just wondering how much "We told you so..." is going to be going on v's "Wow that was a fantastic effort guys, now let's plan the next one to be even bigger and better..."

Quite interesting. Just checked my data usage for the weekend. I took a reading on friday evening at 1846 and had used 16.48GB but just looked again now and have used 16.61GB, both these times within the free data weekend! With the appalling speeds I've witnessed this weekend I'm surprised it can be that much!

One of the great things of the TelstraClear service: there's no filtering or shaping of any kind, except for the transparent proxy for caching purposes.

I believe Slingshot, Telecom and yes Telstraclear all use similar clusters of Bluecoat appliances that can do this stuff.

TelstraClear says they do not have traffic shape in their network - at least not in the way of "if you are using [this protocol/service] we will give it a different priority".

"Can" doesn't mean "do"...

Ragnor: Telsraclear are also participate in the DIA's filter scheme, so you can't say they don't filter.

Oh, that filter. That's a different story, isn't it. It's not like they are stopping you from accessing The Pirate Bay or something similar (for now).

Teeps: Quite interesting. Just checked my data usage for the weekend. I took a reading on friday evening at 1846 and had used 16.48GB but just looked again now and have used 16.61GB, both these times within the free data weekend! With the appalling speeds I've witnessed this weekend I'm surprised it can be that much!

Perhaps they aren't counting traffic at all - and the tiny usage you saw was from a timing issue with billing record being processed? Otherwise you would only need to sustain about 5kbps (less than ONE Kilobyte/sec) over the weekend to see that level of usage!

Five past midnight and my speedtest to TelstraClear WLG has gone up from 2Mbps to 10Mbps. Waiting a few more minutes and will probably go back to 80 - 90 Mbps...

yep what a great weekend, i think the highest i got was maybe 32KiB/s looking forward to seeing it they try thiss again. Cause if they do ill leave!

Am I counting wrong? A bit tired now but I thought that was 130MB? Surely I shouldn't have 130MB taken of my data allowance through a free data weekend? Maybe TC flicked the switch a bit early!

The data counters are not always real-time, so that could be just the last usage of Friday daytime...

Pretty certain when I looked on Saturday it said 16.48GB but I could be wrong, the numbers are close so I could be mistaken, and as I thought it was the same I didn't take a screenshot! Oh well, doesn't matter anyway

I have 15/2 Mb/s cable in Richmond Christchurch, below is what the performance of my connection looked like over the weekend, I work from home and also have a backup ADSL connection with another ISP so the rest of my PCs were routed through that. As a test I downloaded some large database dumps from my server located offshore, I transfer from this server a lot and usually get 1-1.2MB/s speed using 4-5 SFTP concurrent transfers (I break the files up first). As a test I would transfer some of the files over my ADSL connection randomly throughout the day to make sure there wasn't a speed issue at the other end. Unfortunately there was a couple of outages in the data centre (the first I've had) that you can see as gaps below. For most of the weekend I was getting around 35-45KB/s, so around 4% of my normal speed.

I understand this is your experience. But it seems it's localised. I've just downloaded a full SD movie (about 1.4 GB) from iTunes in under 45 minutes (usually we get movies in under 10 minutes).

So while not as fast as usual, not as bad as six hours. We are in Johnsonville, and on DOCSIS3 (which is different but still using the same node).

It would help a lot if people posting speeds, etc, could also report approximate location.

Well central Wellington on cable was unusable.

I spent most of the afternoon trying to download and install updated printer drivers on 3 computers for a new multifunction network printer.

It was bad enough that The Epson download website insists that the drivers had to be downloaded and installed on each computer separately, but having to wait 30 - 40 minutes (10 - 20 Kb/sec) for the downloads for each computer to complete is just stupid on a 15Mb/sec plan.

Logged a complaint call with Telstra Clear at 3pm about them not providing the service I pay for.

Insisted that IMO (as a paying customer) the idiot(s) at Telstra Clear who thought this 'free weekend' was a good idea should be sacked on Monday.

May be I'll send them an invoice for 4 hours work at Sunday rates for a job that should have only taken 30-45 minutes to do....
