Does anybody else get the email saying you're due a refund ($75 in my case) and then going to claim and it says $0.  I have two boxes like this. both the same refund of $0.

Have you read back over the last few pages?

Yes, I did (from page 29) and your reply isn't helpful.

I just had a quick search for '$0' and found this post, just before yours: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=291861&page_no=33#2911172

Have you made any progress @DjShadow ?

There was at least one, perhaps two, who were offered more on the website than in the letter. Lucky them!

Filled out form, they are saying as part of the process returning the box is compulsory.

On recycling page it says to return box and cables. The HDMI cable I’m using is mine, as if one came with VFTV don’t think it reached far enough so wouldn’t have a clue where VFTV one is now.

Also I’m guessing the remote and power cable get returned as well?

I have those, just not the HDMI cable. I paid good bucks for the one I’m using.

It will interesting just how pedantic they will be.  Without digging behind the TVs I'm not sure if I have the original PSUs as I sometime I replace several small PSU with a single larger one for a number of technical reasons.  When I do that the old PSUs end up in a common storage box, good luck finding the original Vodafone one.

I'm sure there are going to people returning incomplete systems for a range of reasons.

From an environmental POV they say "Reuse, recycle, reduce, in that order".  The main unit should be reusable but Vodafone are sticking to the line that the bootloader is some type of god like device that can never be reprogrammed so recycle is the not so good but not so bad option.  The remote, cables and PSU could be reused which is better for the planet than recycling.  Will they enforce the not so good option of recycling when such parts could be reused?

Sure, from a commercial POV they are making a fair offer on the refunds but to be honest if I knew this was the end game I would have never brought them in the first place.  Life is to short to waste on stuff that only has a couple of years use before being replaced.  I would rather return the parts I don't want for recycling and keep the rest to give them a second life with other gear.

FTR it's 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'.
Yes, we too would have avoided VTV if we had known that it was going to only have a life of a few years, mainly because we try to be sustainable 'Reduce'. I've sure many Igloo users feel the same. Fortunately, Spark were not so bad, as TiVo is in the 'Reuse' part of the cycle and one of them will be part of our post VTV solution.

I would have thought they would prefer people to reuse it. as reusing is often the most green thing to do. The three Rs is Reduce, Reuse & Recycle in that order. The Carbon Miles to return these (eg to get a courier pack delivered and then to courier it back) is also potentially going to be large. IMO it doesn't make much sense environmentally to force people to return them if they can reuse them. Reusing cables and the bluetooth remote is obvious. I have tested the remote and it works on my new android tv. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be people that don't return them, maybe they had already disposed of it etc. Will they then require the payment back?

Both Tivos and igloos to a lessor extent could be reused. The Tivo could be rechipped and guessing they're are still many operating today. We still have one operating. With the igloo my retailer switched it over with a generic UHF freeview box and took back the igloo.

Unless you’ve seen something else, the confirmation I received says “We do need you to return your VodafoneTV … ” and nothing more compelling.

And on their FAQ page re VTV closure, VF say: “… you … can…. ideally recycle the device or dispose of it responsibly using our recycling programme.” (My emphasis).

None of that means ‘compulsory’ return and in this case I see it as part of a PC PR virtue-signalling exercise. Once you have received their money, what can they do later to enforce the return of any gear? Dollars to doughnuts there will be no follow-up at all if people don’t return the gear.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t return the gear to do the right thing - all I’m saying is there’s nothing they can or will do later to enforce it. If they are really serious about the recycling, why didn’t they say “Send us the box and then we will pay you out”. Imagine the outcry.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I have manufactured media players from SoC designs before so I know it is very likely bullshit that the VTVs can not be reused.  It is simply the people who implemented the bootloader security have zero motivation to provide the needed firmware or information to unlock it for reuse, and Vodafone either do not have enough sway over them to get it done, or not enough motivation.  I would suspect it is a bit of both.

https://www.vodafone.co.nz/environment/mobile-recycling/

“Just pop your device & cables inside, send it off and we’ll do the rest.”

It’s just how I’m interpreting the above, I also wonder about enforcement.

I normally take my used electronics down to the local recycling depot.

Will attempt to do it their way, less the HDMI cable. The recycling page is also for more then VFTV so makes it less clear what is exactly wanted.

Edit: The recycling page link is in the confirmation email in the same paragraph that says that We do need you to return your Vodafone TV.

In your earlier post you said “It says to return the box and the cables”.

It doesn’t say that. What you have now quoted is generic and applies to anything you send to them for recycling - not specifically to VTV. It doesn’t mean or say you have to send back the VTV cables - it just means that you can if you want to.
