Good news, hopefully this will bring more capital to the TelstraClear divisions and generate some momentum.

I was more curious about what job losses will be happening. Having been through restructuring myself at TCL, I wonder who will be the winner after the restructuring process is complete.

It will be really interesting to see what happens when they consolidate their call centres. Overseas outsourcing and centralisation of call centres has been a disaster for telcos and Vodafone have brought theirs back while Telstraclear have stubbornly stuck to their agenda of shifting this function to the Phillipines.

Interesting!

Does this mean that they have just sold DMZ Global as well (or their share of that company)?

Will be interesting to see what happens to TCL's unmetered content, Game Servers etc, as Vodafone is reknown for being rather Anti that.

DMZGlobal is 100% owned by TelstraClear - so when the sale goes through..... yes.

Wow - Thanks for that.

If you read my post earlier these services will be the first to be given the axe and will be a very disappointing loss

How can you speculate that this service is going to be given the cut?

Have you got some evidence to make this claim or is this unsubstantiated rumour?

The only thing I have heard that the call center is coming back to NZ (good!)

quickymart: Here's hoping that it doesn't go the way it went when TelstraClear took over Paradise/Saturn.

TelstraClear didn't take over Saturn. Saturn *became* TelstraClear by merging with TelstraNZ and then buying Clear.

DarthKermit:
I was with paradise.net.nz since 2000.
Had to change to TC after they phased out the Paradise brand.
Am I going to have to do this again? [username] @ Vodafone.co.nz ?

Not quite sure what you mean. I still use my Paradise account and email address - I've never been asked to change them. I believe that Paradise has been "grandfathered" as a product, but it's still supported.

I havee only skimmed the discussion, but some stuff to consider:

- Vodafone is acquiring the largest unbundled local network (TelstraClear's got more gear in exchanges around the country than other ISPs).

- Vodafone is getting a national backbone. The implications are huge, and will allow then to increase bandwidth allowing a much bigger traffic for their mobile data up and down the country.

- Vodafone is getting a troublesome transparent proxy. I hope they can fix the overselling of that proxy farm sooner rather than later.

- DMZGlobal is a good acquisition for them.

- In my opinion it will be months, if not years before anything changes for Internet consumers...

So word on the street now is that one of the first services to officially go will be the gaming services (assume that means on3 /steam/unmetered). If/when that happens I will most likely have to shift ISP or face massive data prices.

Can you provide evidence of this "word on the street"? From whom did it come from? Please can you show us the official comms?

I think at this stage its only speculation from TCL fans who despise Vodafone. Vodafone want to keep the huge number of cusotmers they have now essentially purchased (wow that makes TCL customers sound like products not consumers) so they will need to be very carefull what they axe and what they don't as they may end up losing some of their investment.

Whatever changes Vodafone have in mind, it is going to take a good 6 months to a year just to align the two organisations before they start happening ... so I wouldn't be getting my knickers up in a twist about it just yet.

The only thing they'll be able to do initially is make some bulk sackings, probably in sales and marketing.  They will likely need to keep the engineers around as they know TCL's networks etc. and it would not be cost effective to merge the networks into one as it would mean replacing far too much infrastructure.

Of course this is entirely speculation but is based on my experience with large mergers/takeovers.  I am sure that Vodafone (globally) are fairly well practiced at this kind of thing, if someone cares to do a little research on how they've handled it elsewhere it might give some good clues, although my understanding is that Vodafone NZ are a little more autonomous than most of the VF subsidiaries.
