I wasn't just talking about market dynamics, but unless you've worked in a large ISP or a Telco, you just don't understand how hard it is to justify moving before the market is ready to pay what something's worth.

And you're right - I didn't have much idea what you do or don't have any real clue about. Fortunately some Googling helped out quite a lot there.

I would counter argue that if people know they are being prevented from making full or innovative use of a technology they will find an alternative technology to work with. People will watch a TV rather than view video on IP, they will use a phone rather than Skype etc.

The trick is to innovate using enabling technologies, apart from attracting customers, it allows a smaller percentage to develop new ways of using that technology which as it becomes more popular generates more demand for the service.

I fully agree with you.

My interest is in driving forward with technology. We need to disconnect the fax as we did with the telex.

We need to disconnect broadcast TV as we did with news in cinemas.

The problem is that you want this but have no clue as to the realities of delivering these changes (which aren't in fact needed yet BTW).

The early adopters here in NZ already have access to flat rate ADSL, Fibre plans with 1TB (I think) and I'm sure someone shortly will do flat rate as well...

Explain, with references to reality, why any sane investor would roll out the level of service you advocate widely when no-one is prepared to pay for it.

I just installed a different router being tested locally by an ISP and instantly my TelstraClear Warspeed connection went from 85 Mbps to 100 Mbps on the TelstraClear/Vodafone speedtest site.

So, yes, a router can make a lot of difference.

Absolutely, the WRP400 max throughput in googling indicated 47Mbps was standard (exactly the result I got). Waiting for a new one coming via the states to max the connection. Hence why I was perplexed by Dons comments re "buying something new". The hardware is certainly the issue for me.

DonG knows all about the wrong hardware. A couple of years ago he complained here on Geekzone that TelstraClear was limiting his connection... Until he revealed he was using a Linksys SPA unit as his main router - it just happens those units have a 21 Mbps limit.

So yes, most of speed problems (most, not all) may be traced back to something inside the house. Unless of course your ISP discloses a problem with available bandwidth (which happens but then you'd hear hundreds of complains, not one or two).

I just thought I would chime in here. I have just moved up from 15Mbps to Warpspeed 100Mbps.
I noticed after the modem swap that I was still getting less than 15Mbps.

I have an Linksys WRT54GL Flashed with an oldish version of Gargoyle, Everything else is Gigabit Ethernet.

When I removed the router from the equation i got this:

So its probably going to be the same for many people who havent bought a flash router yet.

Interesting. We upgraded to Warpspeed today.

On the Telstraclear (Vodafone) speed test we get 100Mbps DL and 10Mbps upload. However, on other speed tests we get anything from 10 to 30Mbps DL and 10Mbps upload (consistent 10Mbps upload on any site); never anywhere near the Telstra (Vodafone) speedtest for download speeds. We have an airport extreme 5th generation as the primary router (and an airport extreme 2nd gen and airport express around the house).

Any ideas why such variability (of course my suspicious mind suggests that the Telstra test is biased!!)

It's not "biased" in the sense it gives you the speed your line can achieve when connecting to the network.

Outside their network... Do you know if the other ISP hosting the speedtest server is not throttling outsiders to show a better picture to its own customers? Do you know if the other speedtest server can actually achieve 100 Mbps? Do you know if there is any problem in the route from one provider to another, perhaps making the packets fly from wherever you are to Taiwan and back? Perhaps the other ISP is under a DoS attack right at the time you're running your tests?

There are so many things that can impact speedtests that it's not funny.

The real test is how you feel the connection is working. Is it better than before? Can you download things faster?
