yousef:
Interestingly I see that Telecom is recruiting for a large IT project also, I wonder how they will go about it and what the impact on their customers will be.

Telecom are still looking for a lot of staff to work on NGN staff including BA's and project managers.

NGN staff? Hmm..... tempting!

I have seen a brief on the system changes but this was kind of "

17th May 12 Noon....., 10-day data migration begins.
Bellsouths 1990's Cobra (Customer, Online, Billing, Rating, Activation) is decommissioned forever on the 29th to be replaced by the global "Siebel" system
27th, All customers on all HLRs become live on the new Siebel system.

Then one final month for the new Siebel to Synchronise....

I'm much happier thay are being careful about this, My biggest gripe is the lack of forewarning, we should have had a couple of months at least!

When you SMS 777 "bal" and the date and time is gone in the reply, You should then be live in the new system.

The 756 MYA text service has now been closed off.

please advise if any of this is incorrect, my source was a brief glance at a chunk of paper.

I got my letter in the mail here on the 17th which was obviously too late if I'd wanted to activate something such as roaming. Considering the letters were dated the 11th (and Vodafone obviously knew about the cut over dates well before then) surely it wouldn't have hurt to give customers a little more notice!

I did quite like the letter however, the "we're doing it to make things better for you and give you better value plans" spin rather than just saying we're changing our systems was a good approach to take.

I know for a fact that the dates of this changeover have moved around quite a bit (it was initially meant to have been done in January), but I agree a couple of weeks notice at least would have been better. Most people would only have awareness of what is happening after reading the letter that was sent this week.

My offtopic troll of the day: On a sidenote... they have managed to send me the migration letter but have failed in sending the last two bills (confirmed address twice and had second bills sent out twice).

I haven't had the letter yet, despite the changeover period having commenced yesterday. I did, however, receive a text message in Vodafone's typical semi-literate style last week notifying me of the changeover.

Thanks for the info Paradoxsm, helps to put everything else in better perspective. I would have thought the "10-day data migration period" could have been made transparent however. And how come it takes the new system a month to "sync"?

Also, can anyone explain why the process was transparent to PrePay customers? There are vastly more PrePay users on the network than on account, which means more data to move around etc, and more emphesis on real-time billing.

SO when do we start seeing these better value plans and more interesting promotions?

At the end of May when the new system is live or at the end of June when the new system is live and synced?

I went into a Vodafone shop today to ask about switching to VF (I actually had no intention of doing this). I was told I wouldn't be able to port my number for up to 6 weeks so I would be stuck with a temporary 021 number. I enquired about plans comparable to flexi and got told "sorry we don't have anything that is as good as flexi" and that I would not be able to add some You Choose components and since I wanted to keep my current Telecom phone (Samsung W531) and wouldn't be needing the free phone I couldn't get an account credit. Great way to encourage new customers.

Slightly earlier I went into Telecom, switched my prepaid phone to flexi mytime and got a $100 account credit. Most painless process I've ever had with a Telco. Took less than 5minutes. Very happy customer here.

As for Vodafone, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor lady who in end the end told me just to stick with Telecom flexi as it was a better deal.

What ever happened to Vodafone, I remember a time when their service was so much better than Telecoms.

I had a chat with the lady about the upgrades and she said they had had a lot of customers over the last few days who were rather annoyed about at the disruptions the process would cause.

Six weeks is an unacceptable length of time to be doing such an upgrade. There is no reason as others have mentioned before me for it to take so long. Everything should be in place so they can just flip the switch.

You can if you have a Samsung W531. It's dual mode CDMA/GSM.

Bypassing the provider lock is easy. Telecom pulled all the phones round a month ago to reflash the firmware due to the code being so well known but it didn't take long to be discovered again.

I have an unlocked Samsung W531. The code on paradoxsm's blog does not work unless you got your phone before they were recalled a while ago.

I have a new one which I was able to unlock myself.
