BarTender: Try changing the internal IP address range, if it doesn't fix it sell it back on Trademe and get a Linksys WRT54GL and load DD-WRT!
BarTender: If you go into the management interface on the router (normally http://192.168.1.1) and in the UI there is a way to change what internal IP Address range you use, normally it's 192.168.1.x, try changing it to 192.168.201.x or 10.64.22.x or something other than 192.168.1.x. Then the router will reboot, and you should dhcp off the router again with your new IP address.
This problem (and has been mentioned at least twice in this single thread!) is caused by the router getting confused by ARP entries for 192.168.1.x on the public (internet) side, when that same range is on the private (internal) side. It seems that a number of the cheaper routers broadcast ARP entries on both sides of the interfaces. If you ran a packet sniffer on the public (internet) side of your router you would see what I mean.
By changing the internal IP Address range then the arp entries either get discarded, or don't affect the operation of your workstations on that network.
Make sense?
Foo: Well, I had my first random disconnection on Tuesday night and got slightly worried. A reboot of the router didn't help, but reboot of the modem did help. Must have been the Surfboard modem
grasshoper: i think i changed it.. i did it to a bit of a random number, if it cuts out i wil try one of the numbers you suggested. Thanks for your help.!
by the way, i got a response from netgear, they just said unless i can get in contact with the seller their isn't much i can do.
