Sorry if this has been answered previously (or in one of the other threads) but I haven't looked at VFTV since the previous launch (Apr 18 was it).  The things that put me off straight away back then were:

  • inability to record all channels
  • screen goes black when fast forwarding

Are these features still crippled in the latest iteration?

Cloud PVR is now available on over 90% of all programming.   We also offer 3 day Reverse EPG (catchup) on an even greater number of programmes delivered directly from our 3 day circular cloud buffer.  The days of missing a live linear programme are almost completely over (and we're working on the last 8%... it always gets harder as you get closer to 100%!).

The fast forwarding UI is now significantly improved.  We also offer a +- 20sec skip.  Further major improvements coming soon.

@sansom I forgot to mention that my current Sky sub is through Vodafone. Does that make any difference?

@kiwifidget That's actually a very good point, and I had started thinking along these lines about your situation before you posted this latest question.  Yes, I think we should look at a package of VTV over IP + Sky over Satellite for the bach scenario.  The small issue for us is how to handle the minimum Starter subscription on the Sky part, but we can talk to them about this scenario - can't promise anything though.

@sansom, no worries, I appreciate that you will look into options for me. I understand that the status quo may prevail.

sansom:...If you want to buy it DM me with where you are in NZ and I'll let you know where you can get it from....

If the Gen1 box will have the same functionality as the Gen2 box (ignoring the hardware differences), then I'm happy to stay with Gen1 and wait for the firmware update.

This assumes that the 'firmware update' isn't too far away.

Yes, if the content contains 5.1, with the latest software it does. (Gen 1 & Gen 2)

Not far away, it’s in testing. DM me your STB serial and we can get you onto the next test wave.

Could an option be to use one of those home-wireless 4G routers at a bach and have zero-rated traffic for the VTV device? (4G signal dependent)

Thanks, I may look at it to replace multi room decoder. Realise it’ll be separate subscription, but have $25 dead money with Sky a month on multi room at moment. And guessing it’ll be easier to move around house if want to watch on third TV.

I’ll see how pricing works out when launch’s. Plus hoping can turn off and on subscriptions from portal and not ring anyone up.

Vodafone should do a deal with pluto.tv that would add a large amount of new free channels. Acessable from the guide as part of the "Intro TV / Freeview" offering.

I can confirm that the major focus for Gen2 and launch as an off-net "cash and carry" product was to ensure it is self-service for activating the box and managing subscriptions.   So, yes, you will be able to use a portal to turn on and off the Sky subscriptions, with no contract term or credit check as it will be credit/debit card payment only.

Just a quick question from a network point of view, is the material being hosted in CDN that is readily available to other ISPs ie Akamai etal as with Spark Sport, or will some ISPs get favoured CDN or routes to others.

@Sansom

Hi, I have sent you a DM as to where we are as we are keen to buy one as this looks like just what we are after.

Thanks

sansom: our 3 day circular cloud buffer.

I look forward to the day @sansom can get the marketing people to put that line into a promotion!
On a more serious marketing note regarding this service, isn't there a danger using the term 'record' in relation to streaming services?
Vodafone TV doesn't record anything, it just effectively bookmarks it for a fixed time. Isn't there a danger of the ComCom, or heaven forbid, customers, getting upset at the use of this term? In defence of Vodafone Marketing, I can't think of good marketing speak for this feature. Perhaps "You can mark a programme for streaming any time in the next 90 days." or somesuch?

There any update on the soft launch and where we can get a box from?
