Now here's something interesting.  Seems that Telecom/Xnet/Someone thinks that I've had enough internets and have taken it away again:
No Internets for You!

Anyone got a rope & know how to tie a slipnot?  Not for me, sorry, Paul Reynolds...and then maybe someone at Xnet?

Anyone wanna confess?

The fix they put in place last week didn't do enough, I'm also affected although not as badly anymore. I've heard from a good source that more changes are being done tonight followed by monitoring. Hopefully this patch will work for now and they (Telecom wholesale) will look to a perminant solution.

I'll chase Telecom Wholesale for some answers,  probably be similar to the response above.

Just to be extremely clear this is not an Xnet related issue, it's DSLAM & RAN related.  It should be affecting anyone connected to the same devices in your local area.

I've been advised by Telecom Wholesale that further work is planned tonight (not sure what happened to revert to such poor service again).  They'll let me know when it's been completed, keep updating this thread with your results and I'll feed it back to them.

Thanks Cameron.

For a while I was able to do real advanced things like...browse the web! Looking forward to being able to do that again.

Hey I had an email from Xnet today, someone asking:

"How have the speeds been the past few days?

We got a note from Telecom Wholesale that they were having some known
equipment issues and they had planned an emergency change scheduled for
overnight on 3 June.

They have asked we let them know if the speeds are still suffering after
the equipment change"

This was after sending through another bunch of speed tests...is the help@xnet.co.nz not monitored?  Certainly this wally hadn't seen my email otherwise he'd realise he was at risk of having his head bitten off!

Anyway, just to reitterate - in case there's any confusion - my speed problem is back to what it was...only not fast offpeak any more.

And before anyone asks, it's not the local network.  There are ways of monitoring this!!

Here's one for you:

While it may not seem too bad (!!) note the ping time: 285ms.  After the "repair" it was 35ms.  This is the killer.  Speed test paused for around 20 seconds after the ping test before it was able to begin the download...something seriously wrong.

Hi Cameron,

Dunno if Telecom did the fix or not.  Performance is erratic, although a little better.  It's varied from good:

to not so good:

You'll note the times are not that different.  However, ping times are down (see yesterday's results).  Maybe the leeches are on holiday?

Has it been fixed?  Not convinced.  After the first "temporary" fix, speeds were quite consistent.  This is up & down all over the place.

You let me know what to think.

I haven't had confirmation that the work they were meant to do on Thursday was completed.  Chasing Telecom Wholesale for some updated information.

They've advised it is a congestion issue at the exchange and they're reviewing network data/flow. I've passed on your feedback and noted it still seems rather poor. They still need a few more days data to review before making any further changes.

Please keep doing your speed tests during peak time. I'll keep the pressure on to ensure they're aware of the customer experience.

Thanks for chasing!

Interesting, originally they said there wasn't any congestion.

I didn't record any speed tests last night (I'll admin, I was busy investigating the local WiMAX network...but I'd rather not!), but it was fluctuating between about 600Kb & aroung 2.5Mb.  At 8:00pm (approx.) last night I was unable to watch any youtube!  I also noted that when browsing some websites when I first went to them did not load.  When I refreshed they loaded fine.

Latancies were OK-ish (<100ms), but occasionally a ping would go over 1 second!

Sounds like congestion!

Cheers
