kingjj: I thought that all new Vodafone Post Paid accounts came with a credit limit automatically? When I signed a new contract in December I was given a $250 credit limit. Does this limit get removed after a time or do people that move across from Prepay have no Credit Limit?

I couldn't honestly answer that.  I was only responding to jpollock's statement which seemed to assume it wasn't possible.

NonprayingMantis:

I know nothing about Telco biling systems, but how quickly do you suppose the billing info comes through to the carrier in the 'home' country?

does it come to them instantly?  Maybe it takes several days.  I know the Broabband usage meter for national traffic takes several hours to update.  If a similar meter for internatioanl calling existed it might only update overnight.

It depends on the exchange agreement.

There are two ways, cold-billed where the bill can arrive later, and hot-billed, where permission is sought prior to the call or SMS being handled.

When the carrier has a roaming agreement that includes prepaid service, then _that_ is hot billed.  Vodafone NZ roaming to Vodafone Aus/UK is an example of this (I assume).

However, it takes a bit of effort to agree a prepaid roaming agreement, so calls will typically be cold billed.  Membership in the GSMA includes a default roaming agreement (I believe).  Which is why Vodafone wants a credit card attached to your prepaid phone before you can roam with your prepaid phone in the US.  However, I don't have any experience with the GSMA, only at the network service layer (not contract/policy negotiation), so I don't know what the settlement period on a cold-billed charge is.  It might be pretty short, depending on the hub.

I can't speak for TNZ/2Degrees, I don't have a phone on either of those networks. :)
