sbiddle:
My understanding was that as a result of losing the court case the billing was changed so that you were now charged $1 immediately, rather than the old partial rating system until you hit the 200kb or $1 mark where data was then zero rated.

So then this is something of the past:

We're charging at the rate of $5 per megabyte up to $1, which works out at less than 1c/KB. Once you hit $1 there's no charging from there to 10MB. From there it's $1/MB until midnight and it's reset for the next day.

You told us you didn't want a walled garden... so it's gone. No more walled garden. Instead, everything is charged at this rate (the only exceptions being Vodafone Compass and Sky Mobile TV). That's not to say future offers won't be zero rated but the model has been reset to be more like the online experience on the regular internet in that you pay for traffic not for content.

Does Vodafone have any plans to match this:

Vodafone $19 plan can do with some "love". Maybe some more data?

It's been upgraded to 100 minutes, unlimited SMS, and 500MB data. Check in "My Account" :)

I still think in these days of large files, high speed devices and alswys-on connectivity, data should be cheaper and more.

500MB is miserly.

Switching to this plan tomorrow when my current billing cycle ends. Ive been on account for 8 years and was on a Smart 2 plan with 120mins, 2500txts and 3gb data for $65 a month. Just checked my usage for the last month, 40mins, 300txts and 279mb.. Will enjoy that extra $45 in my pocket a month! If it has been upgraded to 100mins that will be awesome, some months are busier than others.

So it has. As noted on the website "until 30 August". Wow a whole month and a half.

At the end of the day data in the wireless world is a finite resource and needs to be charged accordingly.

Just look that's happening with XT now around NZ, it's suffering significant issues with speed due to the current data usage.

If you look in Australia you'll see Telstra's LTE network also struggling to cope with the number of users with performance plummeting in many areas over recent months,

This is true, but the degradation of services shouldn't be to the detriment of the end-user...there's more demand because the telco's drive the demand, so that they can then charge for it.

I have no problem paying a fair price for data, but am loathe to pay for a plan that gives me a third or less of the data that i need and a zillion minutes and texts that I don't need.

In saying that - these types of plans (the $19 prepaid specials) are perfect for my wife, who may well be the "typical" user...

Well, judging by the previous track record, it probably will be extended.

I was going to put some minutes back on a prepay vodem I have, and despite not being able to make voice calls, the $19 plan is still a better deal than the equivalent "Broadband Surfer" straight data plan isn't it? (ie 500MB for $19 vs 512MB for $30) or am I missing something?
