So vodafone has jumped on the $19 combo bandwagon with their own offer, matching 2degrees text combo exactly.
$19 - 50 min - 5000 text - 500mb data
http://www.vodafone.co.nz/prepay-smart/

However it says Offer available until 31st Oct 2012. This means the plan reverts to 30mins, 300txt, 300mb.

Comparing the three, vodafones offer is not as good:
Telecom - Can sign up before the end of october, can keep as long as you top up.
2degrees - Drops back down at the end of january
Vodafone - Drops back down at the end of october (Confirmed)

Ah i see you can expand "things you need to know"
Upsized minutes, TXTs and data on Prepay Smart 19 Data and Prepay Smart 19 Talk are available until 31st October 2012. When your Add-On renews after this date they will return to their standard size. Standard sizes are currently: Smart 19 Data ? 30mins, 300TXTs and 300MB and Smart 19 Talk ? 60mins, 300TXTs and 50MB

Haha, so it's pretty pathetic. I bet it'll keep some customers from swapping, but Telecom appears to be the winner for the customer so far.

Looks like it'll be a good Christmas for competition if they are starting this early.

I would say VF & 2Deg are watching how much it costs etc before committing to any extension. It will be interesting to see what happens down the line.

In the meantime just enjoy the bonus!

On facebook when someone asked if there will be any permanent offers in place:
We recently upgraded all our Prepay Smart plans to 300MB and now have the promotion you've seen on Smart19Data. After 31 October Prepay Smart19Data is scheduled to change back to 300MB, 300 NZ TXTs and 30 NZ Mins. ^DP

Or come over to Telecom buying the $5 Sim, port your number and enjoy the nationwide 3G coverage if your phone supports it :)

Now Boys! As I normally say to my children "I don't care who started it, just give it a rest!" Compete on price/allowance or start (yet another) thread on coverage and download/upload speed. There are already 3 threads on this topic (one in each forum).

Doesn't seem right to basically run the promo for 2 months then go back when Telecom clearly state how to keep it for good (or until something better comes along)

Or stem the flow of people switching until the Telecom offer ends (have to have started it by 31 Oct).
Do you stay with VF because the deal is (almost) as good and hope they have a better deal from 1 Nov, or switch now (and buy a TNZ sim, port your number etc). Bearing in mind it is only the last couple of generations of smartphones that run on both networks.
Personally I find it is easier just to have a sim (with discrete number) for each network and use whichever offers the best deal at the time.

Edit: Added comment for TNZ validity term.

As I dont really use the smartphones for calls, I dont bother porting. Sim size difference is a big PITA tho. lost many of the adapters :( got to the stage where I just punched an old vodafone sim to get the outside part to put my micro sim in a full sim phone.

You can pick up Telecom sim's for $5 now.. so why wouldn't you get the sim size of choice.  Especially if you don't care about the number.
