Correction, you can't. There is only one test service playing movie trailers. All other services are encrypted and you must use the provided set top box.

I think he is meaning live tv. Im speaking in terms of the test stream. For that to work it will require multicast etc.

After extensive testing this is confirmed to be either a pfSense bug or config issue, not VMWare related.

I launched a Win 8 VM with a Virtual NIC bridged with the VLAN 10 NIC on the host (connected directly to the ONT). And after the VM obtained a WAN IP via DHCP I was able to stream the test videos within the VM no problem without having to set anything else up (no IGMP proxy settings or anything).

Looks like I'll have to find a different firewall if I can't debug the issue with pfsense (also tried pfsense in Virtualbox and was getting same result).

testing with windows 8 doesnt mean a bsd based OS will perform the same.

for peace of mind, have you considered trying live cd mode of pfsense, running bare-bones.

dump your config to a usb or something.

try to cut down your variables, loosen things up till it comes right, then put it all back together again.

Why? It makes no sense.

The only advantage IP delivery could offer would be true on demand content.

That is a good idea however unfortunately the live CD doesn't like my server and don't have any other bare-bones hardware to test on.

I've tried a bunch of different configs, with firewall etc about as loose as you can get. I did manage to get a clear stream on PC at one stage for a few seconds after playing around with the MTU/MSS (have tried a bunch of combinations) so at the moment I'm thinking that could be a factor along with possibly QoS / PCP and/or some of the pfSense hardware offload settings - but really I have no idea.

Ask Zollymonsta but as he said before if exact same firmware it would most likely be the same delivery methods so its entirely possible on cable with the current setup?

Update: With the help of @chrispchikin I'm now able to get a pretty stable test streams on PC after setting "net.inet.ip.fastforwarding" to "1" under pfSense > System > Advanced > System Tunables tab.

Still working on the STB.. (still showing black channels but no error this time)

It seems out of the 3 test streams I have I (2HD, 1 SD) I can only get 2 working properly at any one time (i.e. watching one after the other in VLC, not simultaneously) which leads me to believe possibly an issue with some IGMP messages not getting sent properly (i.e. leave messages)....but really don't know what I'm talking about here..

Yeah just need to figure out how to do that, any ideas?

Also are there any adverse (performance not security) effects allowing all UDP & IGMP packets from WAN for testing or should this be narrowed down so my connection isn't getting saturated (which I don't think? it is)?

Likewise should I add something like 0.0.0.0/0 (doesn't work btw) to the upstream IGMP settings to ensure I'm not restricting anything for testing or is more not better in this case? (Currently using 203.167.247.45/32 however 203.0.0.0/4 doesn't seem to work and adding 224.0.0.0/4 doesn't seem to improve anything)

I believe the IGMP quickleave is an advanced option that would have to be configured in the cli by editing the igmpproxy.conf file.

Add 'quickleave' to the file (it may be in the /conf/ directory)

Shouldn't be any performance impact, no.

You can try '0.0.0.0/' in the upstream settings to rule that out for testing.
