Talkiet:
Dairyxox: I remember when Google first started their DNS service, one of the features was that it would be faster than a lot of ISP's not because of geographic location but the fact their infrastructure was potentially superior, running on better hardware and more up to date / better software.

It depends how seriously the ISP takes their DNS service. For some of the smaller ones I'd image it's just the bare minimum to make the connections work.

You're so far off the mark it's not funny. Until Google puts some DNS infrastructure in NZ then they're always going to be slower than your ISP provided servers.

DNS is the most critical service to have available and every ISP knows this. Geekzone is great for many things, but it's an utterly terrible place (most of the time) to get advice or information about networks larger than a small business...

Cheers  N

Thanks for attacking me, but all I'm saying is that is how Google propositioned their DNS service in the beginning. Also I never said that in NZ it would be faster, for users in the continental U.S. The claims could be quite true.

To be fair Talkiet didn't "attack" but mentioned your comments were off the mark. If there was an attack he would be in the naughty corner by now.

True I guess, and I do appreciate the expert guidance that the senior members here offer on these subjects. Cheers.

There's been a lot of back-and-forth here discussing DNS, but to answer @johnr's question, I'm running with Vodafone DNS. I've been running with Vodafone DNS for a while now.

Right now, loading Geekzone and stalls on loading scripts from www.google.com. Going directly to google.com or google.co.nz and it stalls as well.

Everything is borked for me, geekzone, speedtest.net, IGN.com, stuff, pretty much every website I have visited tonight. I am using Vodafone DNS 203.97.78.43, 203.97.78.44 I am in Woodridge, Wellington. Speedtests (once they load up) are normal.Same issues on 3rd party DNS. Currently waiing for a trace, but its stuck on the second hop.

Hi Guys I am also situated in Newlands, Wellington and are using Vodafone's Cable network.

When I googled the issue, this is one of the first queries that came up (that would actually loaded within 5 minutes). For the past month or so I've noticed similar issues to the ones described by the OP although very infrequent and intermittent and not bad enough for me to investigate the issue or contact Vodafone. Unfortunately since Monday this week however the internet has become almost impossible to use. We have about 5 computers linked to our home net work via wired and wireless. Every computer is being affected.

When trying to access local websites they load extremely slow, but tend to get there in the end, even as we speak, just trying to navigate around this website, it can take 30 seconds - 2 minutes for a page to load.

Trying to access overseas websites is even worse and some won't even load at all. We have gamers in the house who experiencing everything from an increased latency, to large packet loss and delays, to complete drop outs and being unable to play for 30+ minutes at the time. Initially I thought it might be congestion within our home, or something to do with the wireless frequency, or maybe congestion in the local area (although it is happening during off-peak times as well).

We then explored all the basics of what might be causing the issue within our home network and on our PCs and whilst we are not super tech savy and we are experienced enough to recognize that the issue is not being caused by anything we are doing or can control within our local environment. I will contact Vodafone tomorrow to discuss the issue, but I thought it would be helpful to post this here, since someone from the same local area is experiencing similar issues. (I had gaps in between my paragraphs, so I'm not sure why this appears as one giant wall of text!)

I am in Johnsonville and it's working fine for us in general except these slowdown some times (it seems unrelated to the cable network problems that were being worked on as per other discussion here).

Make sure you are using the Vodafone DNS ending in .43 and .44 for cable. If using another DNS (for online streaming for example) then try setting only on the devices that need it.

I never notice any difference with 3rd party DNS apart from I have more stall's with Vodafone. I use unblockus on all my devices and have excellent results.

So am I; I have seen the same behaviour this week. I don't think it's (directly) related to the issue in this thread - it was 50-60% packet loss to anything beyond the gateway for extended periods. I reported it to them yesterday when they called me to ask how my service was. I haven't heard anything from them since, but I also haven't seen it happen again.

We're still having issues with YouTube videos occasionally taking an unnecessarily long amount of time to start loading.

I don't really have anything else to add, but I'm posting here just to say that there are still unfortunately problems here. :(

Tonight (more so than usual, even) everything is taking aaaages to resolve, even VF sites, basic stuff like Google etc. Keeps hanging on the resolution of various page parts. Using standard VF TCL servers 43 & 44, have reset blah blah, tried multiple systems, wired/wireless ... and nothing reliably fixes it.

Anyone else with something like this, or just me?

This has been happening since the service was installed months ago, on & off, and to varying degrees.

2 mins 40 sec to (partly) load theage.com.au on HFC, 6.5 sec to fully load the same site via 4G tethering.
