Yup thats the problem.

I had to stop playing about 7.30pm cause i couldnt stay connected.
I dont understand why such a serious problem(acording to telstra) has been allowed to occur for so long.

Their network congestion was very poor last night - jitter on VoIP calls that just shouldn't be happening.

With the massive increases in bandwidth over the past few months that every other ISP is suffering from it seems that TCL is certainly not exempt.

I do really object to paying $10 more for a service that quite simply doesn't work any better.. it's very disappointing.

Performance seemed better last night. Only got lagged out of one game, and speeds/throughput seemed very good.

Not that I want to jump to conclusions, but for the second night in a row I have had very good stability.

In fact I got no room drops at all (after hosting several games). Note I was using my router (not direct connecting) and my partners friend was surfing/facebook/playing online web games on her laptop at the same time.

Is it possible they may have "fixed" something?

ps. I should mention the tech never responded to my latest email (where I asked him about the cable TV interfering with cable internet theory) -even though he had responded to the same email-stream in the past..

I will check with TC people today if it is fixed, as it certainly wasnt Monday night.

I have had to stop raiding in WoW as my guild stopped selecting me due to the continual dropouts.

Ok just checked and the isssue I am having has not yet been fixed and is not programmed to be complete until the end of July. Their techy is going to call when the work is complete. Apparantly a large part of wellington has been done, but there are still some nodes left to be done. yes, Im still pissed with them.

It would appear, annecdotally speaking, that Wainuiomata's node (if that is the correct terminology) has recently been fixed (as in the last couple of days) however, I will need more time before being sure of that statement.

And yeah, I can understand why you would be pissed -I reckon they have avoided spending money on fixing this issue for as long as they possibly could, right up until the point where customers are about to start jumping ship.

Not that it really tells us anything new, but I got a response to my email:

"I can confirm that our network has a problem with excessive ARP traffic. We have had upgrades planned for a while now which will take place in Wellington before the end of this month. This will greatly reduce ARP traffic by more than 20x and should resolve your issues. Hopefully you can bear with us during this time while we perform the necessary upgrades."

A 20 times reduction in ARP traffic sounds helpful!

ps. System seems stable again tonight, I'm becoming increasingly confident they have fixed something on the Wainui node.

I still dont understand why they took this long to be open and honest.
These issues have been widespread since November last year. How long does an upgrade take????

By the way I am now on free broadband for the next 2 months if i stay with telstra clear. I hope you guys have demanded some satisfaction for being treated with such ignorance.

And as per the post from doppleganger, it won't be till the end of this month before the arp issue is truly fixed..

I'm embarrased to admit the above post is WRONG.

To cut a long story short, for the first time I had a play with bitTorrent (uTorrent)

Left the client running over-night and all day (didn't realise that a client is also a server). I learnt a BIG LESSON about how bitTorrent works. I won't be using it again anytime soon after getting burnt like that

The whole torrent technology is a client/server architecture. The more you share, the faster you can download. It's all very democratic. If you are prepared to wait for your download, all clients will allow you to constrain your upload speeds. Some as low as 1kBs. So even if you had left the client running all day, the upload volume would have been quite low.

It's a brilliant concept and I applaud the developer who came up with the idea.

However, I downloaded a 700mb file and ended up uploading about 15gigs -That's not democracy, that's a nightmare!!!

ps. and yes, you are quite right -had I known that the value specified for the upload speed should have been entered as a much lower value (as versus my maximum upload bandwidth of 2Mb) I guess I would have avoided this.

Yep -I was being dropped from game after game -didn't even bother trying to host.

But I have to add this is after 4-5 days of very stable performance.

What I find odd is that typically (but not always) I am unable to correlate the drops/instablity with any noticeable drop in speed-test results. (eg using the consumer broadband speedtest web-page or speedtest.net)

I was sent a mail last week which stated that the network issues were resolved and they are removing the $10 creadit each month...

Problem is that the connection is still rubbish. Was playing COD4 online last night and kept on lagging out. Never dropped just stood like a zombie for 10 seconds or so usually until someone shot me

Looks like i am going to have to sit on the phone for an evening again. So that I can talk to someone that takes a message... again... that results in no one calling back.. again

Wish I could get a hotline to their tech staff... The one time I got hold of one he was brilliant
