It seems my neighbour is now in a discussion with our body corporate to get the 25 townhouses in our complex (currently telstra cable tv hostages at the bottom of a valley) Sky Satellite access, or a shared Freeview HD terrestrial aerial at a minimum. We shall see.

25 units full of affluent people, with big HD capable TVs who aren't willing to wait any more.

Is this, in fact, telstra's strategy? Run down the service expectations in their previously core market so they don't need to offer tv any more?

Let's assume 25 townhouses at a MINIMUM of the $50 tv service a month - most will have sport or movies as well, but let's say 25 minimum. $15,000 a year could fall off Telstra's books if we go.

Its interesting the comments about the superiority of the HD signal over the Telstra digital signal and peoples motivation for moving to Sky.

I noticed a massive improvement in picture quality when I moved from Telstras analog signal to their digital signal but I cannot see any appreciable difference when I flick between the digital and Freeview terrestrial HD signal. NB Samsung 40inch six series looking at TV3 news in 1080i.

What I really want from Telstra is a Tivo type box.

But as you say, the false starts by Telstra means no one will believe them when they do announce it.

I'm pretty sure 3 News is shot in SD... So of course you won't see any difference.

You should be able to tell the difference on a 40inch TV. Try comparing one of the HD programmes like CSI (- Miami).

I have looked at HD progs including the Freeview HD sample channel which had snippits from the Poseiden Adventure, etc.

I agree there is a improvement in pic quality but i just dont think its massive leap forward over telstra digital. maybe with larger screens the differences are more apparent.

It also depends on how far away from the TV you're sitting. If you're really interested, there's a chart here:

According to that, with a 40 inch TV if you're viewing from more than about 12 feet away, you're probably not going to be able to tell the difference between SD and HD.

I went from analog to digital on telstra not so long ago and although the picture quality is a little better its still WAY behind Freeview on DVB-T.

Im going to drop telstra digital next week, once the Enlish football is finished, have the winter with just freeview and look at it again in August. I dont need a PVR as I have an HTPC but I do want a better quality picture.

Unless Telstra sort themselves out Ill be a Sky customer for sure.

I shouldve also mentioned that DVB-S is also better than Telstra digital. I honestly only have it for one thing (being the football) and I wouldnt bother at all if I could get that elsewhere.

After my current experiences, I've lost a bit of my loyalty for TCL. Once I have my service back up and running i'll be ditching DTV and getting MySky.
