Remember not everyone would be on 100MBps. They still offer 10Mbps and 25Mbps services.

Competition is good for the economy, creates jobs, and brings down prices. Seems to me TelstraClear don't want the competition and having to vigorously compete in the marketplace. My two bobs worth.

Perhaps we should create a new topic in the ICT Regulation forum just to discuss the merits of TelstraClear's launching a new fast service, and leave this one for the original topic it was created, that is what is my experience when it's installed and what we can use this kind of speeds for?

As discussed here plans updates are being rolled out from October, with new plans for the DOCSIS3 service being rolled out later in the year.

Did they tell you this? I just saw ads in town that say the plans are coming next year.

TC cable users with internet have been sent letters over the last few weeks explaining the change so yes they told us. It is also on the web site if you follow the link in the first post.

I was referring to the 100Mbps/"ultra-fast" DOCSIS 3 plans, not the 15Mbps upgrade. The Stuff link also says it will be in June (at the earliest), which is next year, not this year. I guess Mauricio meant later next year when he said "later in the year" (which is not a valid interpretation of those words), or maybe TelstraClear wasn't clear on that to him.

Just had the 100Mbps service installed... First test was to download an iTunes movie rental (1.2GB) while download a torrent.

The torrent peaked at 6MB/s (equivalent to 48Mbps) while the iTunes movie rental downloaded in about 10 minutes.

I have to go but will test this tomorrow when I have the time to collect numbers in order...

Ok, after a few moments wondering why a local speed test couldn't get past 2Mbps (it was the QoS Max set in my router, doh!) here are the first speed tests...

Now, before you go out, remember once the packets leave the ISP network there's no way to guarantee speed. Also, we have no way to guarantee the server we are trying to reach can actually deliver 100Mbps, and so on.

Based on that, some of these results are pretty good. Others are a surprise (Sydney was a surprise for me!)

Nice speeds - really good for iTunes downloads - I can only dream of downloading a movie that quickly.

Here go some equivalents on a TCL 10Mbps plan:

Christchurch - 9.7 Mbps
Wellington - 7.4Mbps
Sydney - 9.5 Mbps
LA - 5.8 Mbps
London - 2.7 Mbps
Rotterdam - 2.7 Mbps
Singapore - 4.1 Mbps

Will be interesting to see what they're like when they switch up to 15Mbps.

I'm based in Wellington and I've always had better speeds to Sydney than to Wellington using the speedtest.net tester.

It just goes to prove that TCL has better peering arrangements in Australia with other ISPs there than they do in NZ. And also that they can have some influence on speeds outside their network through peering arrangements. Although, I guess a peering arrangement by nature requires both parties to play nicely, so TCL may be completely blameless.

The bigger surprise to me was Citilink in Wellington. I suppose that traffic must be routed overseas to be that slow?

As has been raised multiple times in this thread and the forum - Telstra do not openly peer with any NZ ISP other than Telecom. That means that ISPs who do not want to have themselves bullied by Telstra abusing their market position and buy telstra/Telecom "transit", any traffic to Telstra (or Telecom) from their network will be routed via their international carrier most likely.

The same can be said abot Telecom.

I don't think we have to get into the merits in this discussion (as I said please open another thread for this). But we had (myself and sbiddle) an interesting meeting with Telecom last year on why they do not peer freely, why they started their own peering exchanges, etc.
