I wonder if we can avoid the reset by disconnecing the stb from the internet tonight?  Are they resetting the stb or the whole vodafone tv system?

We will miss VTV.

Yep, it's over. Despite its flaws, the VTV box was still far better for us than any alternative.

Can boxes be returned to Vodafone/One stores for recycling, or is the prepaid courier bag the only way? I requested one using the website form 2-3 weeks ago, not received yet.

Well the extra 196 days was nice, time to reuse those remotes and send back the box.

Just a reminder of how to reuse the remotes.

  1. Unplug the VTV box so it can't try to re-pair with the remote.
  2. Press and hold both the '3' and 'Yellow' buttons on the remote until the power light flashes red.
  3. Enter paring mode on the other device and you should see the the Vodafone remote there ready to pair.

Credit goes to any earlier post but I can remember who originally posted this info, it was way back in this thread.

Nope, they were going to decommission the entire platform. And now they have.

An interesting piece on how we got to where we are in the Herald (paywalled).

In summary, we would probably still be using Vodafone TV (or a direct descendant of it) now if the Sky Vodafone merger had gone ahead back in 2017.

It's also interesting to hear how Sky had invested $38m in a streaming solution 5 years ago, but it was scrapped by the last CEO.

Also, Freeview is working on the assumption that terrestrial broadcasting will end by 2035.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

A shame apps like Netflix, YouTube can’t still be used

Even Freeview acknowledges the end is coming for traditional terrestrial broadcasting will end in around 12 yrs. However, Sky is still flogging a dead horse with a new box and an obsolete satellite system.

Sky: read the room, and build out an app now as by the time it's ready (based on your history) it will be 2050.

The Sky box was old, and they had no choice other than to introduce a new model.

Sky NZ has a contract in place for satellite delivery through to 2031 (which they share with Freeview). The new hardware should carry them through to that time, and they're no doubt already planning to migrate to streaming only at some point. As the new box supports streaming, they could update the software to deactivate the requirement for a satellite feed whenever the satellite broadcast comes to an end.

Beyond the immediate need for a replacement hardware solution, a software-only streaming solution would still be preferable for the future though!

Is it worth keeping the power adapter for anything? Such a nice remote too. I assume it won’t be able to pair with Apple TV box that has the worst remote ever invented.

The remote is supposedly usable with some other devices, although I couldn't get it to work with my Apple TV.

It's worth updating to the latest Apple TV remote if you're still using the old black one - it's much better.

I’m using that tiny black remote with half shiny and matt that you rub your finger over and it misses the instruction every time. Most infuriating remote ever and very tiring in the hand. Am still deciding wether I want to keep the box or sell it so not wanting to spend more on a newer remote.

Am using an old Android box with Kodi at present to replace VTV. Also annoying as Ch1 and 2 buffer constantly and make it freeze. Was going to get the Google TV but holding my breathe for a while to see if something newer comes along that is Ethernet capable. Really missing VTV and to think I was dragged kicking and screaming to it when we had to change over to it.

Fair enough, but yes, the black remote was awful. The new one has a click wheel, and for me it turned Apple TV into an enjoyable experience (along with a surprising speed increase going from an old Apple TV HD to the latest generation).

It's taken a couple of weeks to get used to not having the VTV, but I've got pretty much everything I need working on the one box now, and unlike a number of other devices I've tried (including Sky Pod and some awful Dish TV devices) it's fast and easy enough for all the family to use.

We have gone to Google TV. Don’t miss linear TV except for Rialto channel and no access to Prime TV via native app but you can port from Sky Go on phone. Cheapy remote but voice search is great. There is not a native Ethernet option available from Google NZ but you can purchase an adapter via ebay. The Google TV app is great and you can control it in another room with the built in remote
Get used to app based viewing and not being afraid of churning content suppliers as shows are released - Succession on Neon - Ted Lasso/Morning Show on Apple TV!
