Fibre just went live here, paying the same to Vodafone but the performance is like night and day with regard to the issues in this thread. The fact I'm able to get here without resorting to my cellphone is itself a massive improvement.

I've finally been promised a VDSL connection scheduled for next week to run alongside the cable ... I'm guessing my results will be the same. Modem arrived today, can't wait to get my $80 worth of internet a month!!

YouTube's been fairly responsive and well-behaved for this last week or so. We've still got some congestion at peak hours, but overall things are looking nicer in this regard. :)

After all the issues with Vodafone, can I ask why you are still paying them now that you (I assume) have more options?

Contract break fees. In hindsight would have been worth it, but now that we're away from godawful cable I'm inclined to wait out the term.

I have just moved into (temporarily) a Wellington property with Vodafone cable. Whilst my speed tests are a little erratic, but generally decent both ways, the Ping is always high - generally averaging 200ms+ to trademe.co.nz or geekzone.co.nz - is this likely due to this widespread ongoing problem, or a local issue?

I have replaced the router, and it still happens. A traceroute show a big delay on the second hop.

Any ideas most welcomed - thanks in advance.

My ping to Geekzone is 18 ms and under. Make sure you aren't testing over WiFi.

I was on wireless (via Apple Time Capsule in the same room which has never been a limiting factor before) - but have just plugged into gigabit ethernet and get the same result. Example:

traceroute to geekzone.co.nz (104.25.178.9), 64 hops max, 72 byte packets
1  10.0.1.1 (10.0.1.1)  1.104 ms  1.081 ms  1.247 ms
2  * * *
3  lo0.internet.ivpn.pe25.telstraclear.net (218.101.61.124)  440.736 ms  280.098 ms  128.515 ms
4  198.41.236.254 (198.41.236.254)  100.922 ms  49.066 ms  52.540 ms
5  198.41.236.253 (198.41.236.253)  171.741 ms  50.605 ms  56.453 ms
6  104.25.178.9 (104.25.178.9)  146.718 ms  310.021 ms  159.941 ms

I'm not sure what else to check.

Can you just do a ping instead of tracert please?

Although I have to say, my tracert is just 9ms to that third hop...

Delayed response, but still have similar results below.

I might plug my machine direct into the cable modem (should be possible?) to reduce potential issues even further - but then I am running out of suggestions.

Have you logged a fault with Vodafone? That would seem the best next course of action.

I'm having some difficulties this afternoon. I have one download going at <10 KB/s, and some YouTube videos are reporting connection speeds of 256 Kbps or less. Speed test results peg me at a solid ~130 Mbps, however.

It's really bad here tonight. Several sites are stuck on "Connecting..." for several minutes. It's essentially unusable.

When I thought it was the end of a long day, time to relax watching something streaming... Nope, no, nothing.
