Geektastic:
Personally I still have difficulty adjusting to an environment where you actually have to pay for handsets at all.

You and me both, in 6 years in the UK I had 9 new phones and didnt pay for a single one of them. Or have any extra charges applied when I upgraded soemtimes only 6 months into a contract !

But the reason for that was simple, the conversation would go something this like....

Me: Hi, I see the new xyz phone is out next week and I would like to upgrade my current handset.
Vodafone CSR: sorry Sir your only 6 months into your contract you cant have a new phone.
Me: Well O2 will give me one for free, plus a wall charger, leather case, handsfree, more free minutes, more texts and more data for the same price I pay you.
Vodafone CSR: Im sorry Sir but I dont have the authority to do what your asking.
Me: Ok, whats the address that I send my disconnection letter to ?

24 hours would go by and then....
Vodafone Rentention Supervisor: Hello Mr Sims, what can I offer you to stop you from leaving Vodafone?

At that point I would name the phone, the plan and any extra goodies and I would have it all the next day.

Only when there is competition is the customer valued.

that is so true. When there is competition then customers are valued. Atleast when telecom releases its new network consumers will have more choice when it comes to mbile phones

You are so right Martyyn.

I had Orange mobiles for about 15 years before I moved here and I paid 99 quid for the first one and never paid for another one - for more or less the exact same reasons you give!

I would add that effective regulation that regards the customer as paramount and the providers as existing only to do as they are told also helps a lot!

Since...

9.12am 19 August: All iPhone 3G models SOLD OUT  (Vodafone online)

and from Paul Brislen on Vodafones own forum on the 17th Aug
"the iPhone plans are agreed on with Apple so we're not allowed to vary them I'm afraid. I cannot confirm any different plans/pricing at this stage."

... it would seem there could be quite a wait for new plans.
Strange for Vodafones External Communications Manager to allude to new plans soon (to NBR - they stated the next few days on the 4th, but may have misquoted Mr Brislen).

As a potential customer I feel lost...

We all share your pain!

I remain amazed that Apple would agree to such poor plans.

I gave up waiting several days ago, have bought a Nokia N95 for $795, has many of the same functions as Iphone. So I guess Im just another one of the potential lost Iphone customers (supposedly several thousand out their) who will not be buying an iphone from Vodafone. I may reconsider if Telecom release the iphone on their new network....

I spoke to a telecom rep the other day and she said that it was more than likely that telecom will release the iphone on there new network. I guess we can only wait and see......

Out of interest, are there any countries with more than one iPhone carrier? If there's no overseas precedent then I can't see it happening in New Zealand.

Yeah, there definitely is, Australia for example, most of the new countries ie. ones where the 1st gen iPhone wasn't released seem to be non exclusive contracts. This seems the logical shift for apple if they intend to get this phone to the largest audience possible.

Sure there is. A close example is Australia:
  • Optus
  • Vodafone
  • Telstra
  • Virgin Mobile
Can't see why Telecom won't bring the iPhone here.

You have most probably done Vodafone a favour by doing this. From what I hear they have bigger margins on this (compared to the iPhone) and keep all the revenue from data usage! Vodafone are making a hell of a lot more money out of you for going with the N95 over the iPhone.

No skin off their noses with customers choosing another of their handsets over the iPhone - and as stated, they'd probably prefer you did so!.

However, were you to switch networks then it may well be a different story as they have then lost a customer.

If someone was inclined to make a stand over the iPhone offerings from Vodafone then surely they'd jump ship to Telecom now rather than in the possible event that Telecom takes the iPhone on board?!

I rarely practice punitive purchasing, Telecom needs to work just as hard as Vodafone to get my money. I prefer GSM phones because they're usuable in most other countries that I travel to. If Telecom wants my money they'll sell me an iPhone (or something better) at an great price with a great plan. If they don't then I hope someone else comes along to compete with them.

Vodafone continues to disappoint, my phone broke 2 days before they released the iPhone and I was probably as desperate as anyone could be for a great new phone. I'm particularly picky about UI and was really excited for the app store. Once I saw the plans I knew it would be better to wait and see. I bought the cheapest phone I could find off of dumpit.co.nz and I'm holding out for things to get better. Either Vodafone will blow me away with some new iPhone plans or I'll be switching over to Telecom once they swap to GSM. If Telecom releases GSM with iPhone plans that aren't significantly better than Vodafone's then I won't be buying one from them either.

Vodafone has lost a considerable amount of goodwill from me. When they came to my door selling broadband I told them I wasn't really interested, mostly because I've seen how they treat their mobile customers. I did some hunting around and decided to go with another company instead that was simillarly priced but didn't have Vodafone's terrible track record of treating and communicating with customers.

Corporate PR from Vodafone seems to be consistantly condescending to me and this entire "new plans are coming in a few days" thing seems to be another example of that. "Oh, isn't it more fun this way, hahaha? Australians are stupid but get better prices than you do. Hahaha."

I'm not laughing.

Well, to be honest, that rant was a little funny Laughing. On a more sombre note, your opinion is shared and you will have plenty of receptive ears on this forum.

The odd thing is I'm not the kind of guy that rants that much. At Geek Zone I'm mostly a lurker, reading a lot of forums but never really feeling my opinion is worth sharing. It's only when I see a forum like this that directly effects me and is so frustrating that I get all riled up!

Whenever I have been out of contract with VFNZ (3 times now), I have called customer service and told them I am thinking of migrating to another provider - what can they do to help me to decide to stay with VFNZ. A manager or the disconnections team has always come good - but you need to have a fairly specific idea as to what you want.

Essentially, I used the same strategy as I employed when living in the UK, with similar results.
