Read that article this morning while waiting for my coffee. Hopefully (for you guys, since I've since left TCL) they actually go through with it and stick with that time frame.. It sounds good. If nothing else an HD capable recording device is needed.

I thin kthey need to worry about that before starting to "play" with these other services. I always said I'd probably go back to TCL for their TV - I think they're quality (of the sky channels) is higher than sky.

My sweet spot would be Telecom for Internet and TelstraClear for TV. Just a pity that neither company will let you have just those services and not have to bundle with others.

It will be another big point-and-laugh attention for TCL if they can't deliver what they said in Stuff... as I think TCL customers are tired of over-promised-of-nothing... good luck to them, we're still have TCL digital TV but that's because we're giving them the chance befor TiVo arrives, and perhaps what other options out there...

@Nety, the new Tui ad should be:

"TCL is bringing HD PVR to Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch InHome Digital TV subscriber."

And have this placed next/near by TCL's Best Best Best... billboard.

I think this one will be worth the wait and will beat Sky and Tivo hands down. The biggest part of this news is that it's an IP based solution therefore you've be able to potentially watch tv via a number of different devices - STB's, Mobiles or PC's. It's a great way of future-proofing from TCL's point of view plus it opens them up to sell to non-STB customers in the future.

Does this mean TC have been lying? Everytime I asked them about HD it was in testing and would be released towards the end of the year (2008), then early 2009, then mid 2009. Now they're saying they've just struck a deal for a solution? WTF have they been "testing" for the last 2 years? What was it that they planned to release exactly prior to this announcement?

I think this platform could be Telstra's saviour. If they can offer IPTV nationwide to any ADSL2 subscriber then that opens up a huge market for them. It also now makes sense that they have been working on their nationwide internet providings - they could gain a lot of new customers if they can offer free bandwidth for their IPTV platform for customers who sign up for ADSL + phone + IPTV. They could also potentially provide a PC-based client that could hook into Windows Media Center. Or perhaps they will strike a deal that would allow Tivo to access their IPTV platform...? Lots of possibilities.

The rumours were about TelstraClear would launch a PVR back in January/February 2009. It didn't happen obviously.

Too late for me, I dropped the 'digital' tv from my package yesterday. interestingly I was put through to the retention team (which is no surprise I was leaving after all) and the woman asked me why I was leaving.

I said I was fed up with the poor quality picture and the countless broken promises of HD and a PVR. She said 'fair enough, can we collect the box on Saturday ?'

Is that sort of attitude typical in NZ from retention people ? When I was in the UK it always meant you got a better service for half the price because they would do anything to keep you.
