freitasm: Remember not everyone would be on 100MBps. They still offer 10Mbps and 25Mbps services.

Don't forget all res customers move to 15mbps on 1 October :-)

I tried to overload my connection today, by downloading some torrents. All those were video legally available through Vodo, except Jolicloud which is a Linux port available directly from their site at jolicloud.com.

Note that I did not limit uTorrent 2.0.4 speeds, and allowed a very large number of connections (4096 connections total, up to 2048 connections per torrent). The only torrent that could get a very large number of connections would be The Yes Men Fix the World, with more than 5,500 seeds.

The peek speed was 6,428 KB/s (kilobytes per second), equivalent to about 51 Mb/s (megabits per second).

As torrent downloads finished ETA for those files with less seeds started to decrease - it's clear uTorrent was giving more priority to those files with more seeds or better speeds.

It took about 30 minutes to complete the first nine files with a total of 3.2 GB.

I am in the 120GB plan, but during the trial my usage is zero rated.

To tell the truth our usage hasn't changed much, if at all. I am just pushing those torrents to really test the service though. I don't have any intentions of keeping seeding them (that's why they are stopped in the screenshots).

Anyone catch the NBR article about this TCL 100Mbps today?

It appears Chris Keall got confused by the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial name and referred to it as a pure fibre service and compared it to the crown fibre FTTH project. So it would appear TCL's marketing scheme "Feet up Mr Joyce.." has worked on at least one person :P

I pointed this out in the comments and the article was removed shortly after

Yes. Chris used one of the speed tests I posted here, and a speedtest from a company in Christchurch and proceeded to compare both - even though TelstraClear is clearly (no pun intended) a consumer offer, and the other one was a dark fiber offering to businesses. Very different things...

I pointed out that this is HFC and not even in the same league as fiber. The article was removed as you noted.

Since you are reporting about the trial, I am sure TCL will be making sure you have some success with the trial.

Personally I find it a bit ripe that TCL are trying to lobby against the Govt's initiative for their own greedy selves.

It was interesting to watch the Australian situation recently where the Labour's boradband scheme actually won the election for them by persuading the independants to side with Labour.

Which maybe the case... However I have been a TelstraClear broadband customer for over 10 years and I have always had good service (no talking customer services). There's no throttling your connection, they don't block ports, you get what are sold.

I will take the comment as joke, seeing some other ISPs limit torrents to 20KB/s, getting 6428KB/s is not bad...

The problem with torrents is that we don't know for sure how many seeds are here in the country, so I will assume only 25% are local, so 51 Mbps mainly from overseas connections is pretty good.

Also the uTorrent protocol might proritise in some way that maxing out the line is not really productive - perhaps the seeds and peers have limited upstream bandwidth? Who knows if they can serve as fast as we can consume.

Then there's the router. I am using a Cisco SRP 512W - suitable for small business. How many packets per second can this router do? Is it faster than other, consumer level, routers?

Lots of variables....

Hmm... I'm not 100% on that. I've been a cable customer 7 years now and noticed in the last 6 months that a torrent will start off all good (500+ kb/s) and drop to 3k/dial-up speeds in about 2 minutes. Restart the software and it's all good for 2 minutes, change random ports and it's all good for 2 minutes. I've tried utorrent, vuze, transmission etc... all on 3 different PCs and 2 different routers.
I don't have any hassles with XDCC tho :D

btw, 90% of these torrents have been linux distros... not saying all are, but most

edit: actually tried deluge about an hour ago and the same thing.
