Some people in this thread have raised the topic of DC providing similar speeds. The aim of 4G is twofold - to improve spectrum efficiency of networks and secondly to improve end user experience.

While NZ is a long way behind Telstra's markets (HK and AU) in terms of data demand, this presentation is a good explanation of how DC-HSPA and LTE work well in tandem: http://www.gsma.com/spectrum/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/paulwangcslgsmalte1800v1.pdf

Please note you have to use the ' vodafone ' APN to access 4G (when using correct handset and on correct plan)

John

edit: The default iPhone APN should work fine for 4G www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz

Cheers John! It's working now!

FYI the default iPhone APN needs to be changed to "vodafone" from the default "www.iphone-vodafone.net.nz"

so you're saying 4G is strictly only available to those on the $120+ a month plans like it states?

Kinda lame if you BYO 4G device and want those speeds on the lower plans..

I think there is a surcharge for smaller plans but it's included on 120+ Plans!

You can, it costs $10 extra a month on the < $120 plans, and it isn't available on Prepay.

be careful about running too many speedtests.  it can easily burn off large amounts of bandwidth at high speeds.

$10 a month extra, for the privilege of burning through your data cap faster?

I am failing to see the logic in that? I would have thought it was a given..

I guess you pay for the privilege? Given they just spent money upgrading to DC, the LTE bill has to be paid somehow.

Don't be disingenuous. Do you complain paying extra for a v8 in your car just because it burns through your fuel faster? I don't like the $10 fee either, but at the end of the day, it's not JUST so you can burn through your cap faster and to suggest it is, isn't reasonable or representative of the facts.

But they haven't even deployed much at all, parts of auckland only. Rather pointless anyone else in the country opting in for that extra charge yet.

This is great, but I'm surprised there isn't much more comment about the data caps?

From the plans I can see, it costs a massive $110 a month to get 2gb of data to use on 4G (I'd be curious if there was a cheaper way). And this could be quickly burnt up in under 5 minutes easily, especially if you are doing what they suggest: "streaming HD movies, or downloading them in minutes, not hours. Gaming in real time, not delayed time. Downloading an entire album in the time it takes for a single track on standard 3G"

Apologies for this sounding cynical, but these activities sound unviable on these small data caps.
