I've actually found the business help desk quite helpful.

I put my SIM into my new N5 over the weekend and there was no 4G. I then called the help desk on Saturday evening (I guess I don't have a life!) and asked for the change. They did it pretty much immediately and I was on 4G. Not sure I had to reboot the phone but I did anyway.

Discovered today that I was getting charged $10/month for 4G and called in to ask it to be removed. They didn't think my plan qualified for free 4G but on deeper inspection found it had been promised to me and so removed the charge.

So all good so far.

One minor warning. If you are infatuated with 4G and do speedtests all the time, it burns through data like there is no tomorrow!  I was getting 146Mbs downloads on my last test (Wellington CBD) which burned through about 100MB of data!

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Well I always find this type of advertise interesting.. " available to all on account". Year right..... Only if you pay extra...that's the part they love to miss out.
I pay $90 a month on account, plus extra when I go over my limits, but do I get 4G, NOOOO.
This only happens if your a new customer. Typical stuff with vodafone.. Give all the new deals to new customers to get them to sigh up.. Stuff the old ones who've been with them for years... It's so vodafone to do this.. You have to fight and complain all the time.. I'm over it.

I still find it interesting (more as a discussion point than a complaint) that Telecom are able to offer 4G to ALL customers and yet VF can only do this for people on newer plans.

Is this the billing set-up, the back-end systems, or simply a commercial call?

We will most likely never know, but my guess would be a commerial call.

As a long time mobile customer (and an even longer time broadband customer) it does bug me a bit that prepay customers who can jump ship at a moments notice and those who sign up for "new" plans are treated with the 4G while us long time loyal on account customers have to fight to get these things.

I'm sure it's a commercial decision. Get new customers. How hard is it to add 4G to an existing account?

It takes 3 minutes on the phone with a CSR. I have it done 3 times, twice with LTE WiFi devices that were not activated properly and once with my existing VF SIM that I put into a N5 and wanted 4G on the account.

Getting them to not charge for it is a bit harder :-)
