Vodafone offers free 4G and loads of data

Vodafone today announces free 4G on all current On Account and SIM only plans, and increases in monthly data allowances across On Account and SIM Only packages for new and existing customers – at no extra cost.

Data allowances on Vodafone’s Red and Red Essentials packages have been boosted. Red now comes with 2.5GB and the data on Red Essentials has increased to 1.5GB. Customers with a $59 SIM Only plan will get 1.25GB data; those on a $39 SIM Only plan will get 1GB. All existing customers on these plans will be automatically upgraded to the new data allowances, with no increase in monthly fee.

Vodafone Consumer Director, Matt Williams says the way Kiwis are using their mobile and tablets has evolved since Vodafone brought 4G to New Zealand eight months ago.

“Vodafone 4G is giving our customers new flexibility and independence. It lets them share more, stream more and shop more on the move. Superfast 4G opens up a range of possibilities for our customers – from browsing to gaming to HD movie streaming – so it’s right that we increase the data allowance on our plans to meet these needs.”

I see they're preparing for Telecom's launch. Nice to see some competition starting!

Oh excellent, I hope the extra data kicks in this cycle.
Phone died last week at a conference and I rather stupidly let the replacement phone sync all apps over 4G. Only noticed due to the data usage alert being set to 1.5GB and am fortunately on the 2GB plan.

Its good that 4G is a given - seemed a bit cheeky billing it out separately as a feature.

Definitely good to see the 4G premium drop and increase data bundles.

Agreed. 4G on Prepay is easy, changing the prices to cope will be the tricky part. But that's no excuse, thats why all those analysts work at these companies....!

Is this effective immediately? The media release is silent on timing.

When they say "On Account" plans do they mean only their current plans that are entitled as "on account"?

or do they mean any existing bill monthly plan an existing customer is on (which most people would call "on account")?

has the cell site in west auckland with 1 megabit download, 100kbit going to get upgraded with older equipment from the 4g going into the city/remuera etc?  (exhibition drive)

well there's probably more than one of them like that.  but it seems silly to have 150megabit internet on phones when calling is dodgy and internet is 1000kbit/100kbit in other areas.

This was upgraded months ago to U900/U2100 dual carrier, fibre feed. Most likely it has already got LTE ready hardware too.

These plans already had 4G included, so must apply across all on account plans.
