Let's change it for Windows then:

Create a temp folder if you don't have one then issue the wget command redirecting output to a file on that folder:

md c:\temp
wget -q -O - http://192.168.0.1/goform/system/GatewaySettings.bin > c:\temp\strings.txt
c:\temp\strings.txt

Also just noticed how do i setup a perm dhcp assignment on thisTC7210, after 7days my port forwarding will break by the looks of it.
At least the netcomm wifi routers had this feature.

phantomdb: ... i done a port scan of the Parents modem from my Cable connection to find port 53 DNS open, in the past i have been contacted by TelstraClear/Vodafone about my port 53 being open causing issues on the Cable network. ...

@phantomdb Can you please send me a private message with the account details of the parents? Our techs want to double check the hardware involved etc. They're pretty sure there's nothing to worry about, but want to still check it over.

I agree with Dylan. After the posts here I contacted Vodafone and was told this port is not open by default on shipping devices.

I'm switching to Vodafone cable from Vodafone ADSL this weekend but I'm a little worried after reading this thread and others regarding cable congestion issues in Wellington…

In particular I'm worried about this new modem/router. I'm currently using a Time Capsule as my router alongside a Draytek Vigor for ADSL, but if I understand correctly, I wont be able to use my Time Capsule for wireless or backups in the same fashion with cable? Or is there still a way to do so without introducing extra latency into my network?

For anyone else on Vodafone cable in Wellington, would you recommend staying put on ADSL? It seems like if I switch to cable (it's the same price as ADSL) I can expect higher download speeds during offpeak but may encounter worse speeds than my current connection in the evenings? Or are the 'worse cable speeds' still better than peak ADSL speeds?

Thanks in advance!

Should be faster than ADSL pretty much all of the time. I have found peak speeds to be a lot better since they upgraded the network as well. Not sure about the Time Capsule thing, you can't set the TC7210d to Bridge mode afaik so you can't use the Time Capsule as a router, however you might be able to use it as a wireless access point. The TC7210d does have Gigabit ethernet ports.

Totally recommend cable. We have been on it in Newtown for about 12 years or so. Very reliable and consistent here. Recently when people on 100 Mbs or faster plans were experiencing delays down to single digit or worse speeds, our 50 Mbs plan seldom got below 20, and was usually between 30 and 50 on a variety of Speedtest sites.
Don't tell Vodafone (Mike, Dylan, cover your screen), but we won't consider changing until we can get UFB. At that point ... the 2 Mbs upload speed is sometimes annoying ...

You're welcome! :-)

Cable does have congestion at certain parts of Wellington, but not ALL of it. The bigger issue in the threads was the excruciatingly slow acknowledgement and action from Voda, which just made things worse. But a huge investment was made, and cable continues to rock and roll. I see slowdown in the evenings but not as bad as some others, and most of the time it rocks at full speed and I've never really had a problem or extended outages. Just lucky I guess.

Regarding the modem, if you were able to use your DSL modem in routed mode with your time capsule, then it should be fine with the technicolor, ie it's just a device hanging off the end of the technicolor and using it as a DHCP source.

The cable market is voda's to lose - it's captive meaning high inertia to swapping to dsl or ufb (because of physical changes required at your house), whereas ufb is a godsend for churning customers quickly and easily and paying Chorus $80 per transaction (there are ISP fees they pay for transfers... nothing is free and Chorus charges like a wounded bull).

About the only thing you may miss is that option to easily swap over if you see a better offer somewhere.

Fibre > Cable > DSL

Even with the issues.
