I'm switching to Vodafone cable from Vodafone ADSL this weekend but I'm a little worried after reading this thread and others regarding cable congestion issues in Wellington…
In particular I'm worried about this new modem/router. I'm currently using a Time Capsule as my router alongside a Draytek Vigor for ADSL, but if I understand correctly, I wont be able to use my Time Capsule for wireless or backups in the same fashion with cable? Or is there still a way to do so without introducing extra latency into my network?
For anyone else on Vodafone cable in Wellington, would you recommend staying put on ADSL? It seems like if I switch to cable (it's the same price as ADSL) I can expect higher download speeds during offpeak but may encounter worse speeds than my current connection in the evenings? Or are the 'worse cable speeds' still better than peak ADSL speeds?
Thanks in advance!
Should be faster than ADSL pretty much all of the time. I have found peak speeds to be a lot better since they upgraded the network as well. Not sure about the Time Capsule thing, you can't set the TC7210d to Bridge mode afaik so you can't use the Time Capsule as a router, however you might be able to use it as a wireless access point. The TC7210d does have Gigabit ethernet ports.
All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

Cable does have congestion at certain parts of Wellington, but not ALL of it. The bigger issue in the threads was the excruciatingly slow acknowledgement and action from Voda, which just made things worse. But a huge investment was made, and cable continues to rock and roll. I see slowdown in the evenings but not as bad as some others, and most of the time it rocks at full speed and I've never really had a problem or extended outages. Just lucky I guess.
Regarding the modem, if you were able to use your DSL modem in routed mode with your time capsule, then it should be fine with the technicolor, ie it's just a device hanging off the end of the technicolor and using it as a DHCP source.
The cable market is voda's to lose - it's captive meaning high inertia to swapping to dsl or ufb (because of physical changes required at your house), whereas ufb is a godsend for churning customers quickly and easily and paying Chorus $80 per transaction (there are ISP fees they pay for transfers... nothing is free and Chorus charges like a wounded bull).
About the only thing you may miss is that option to easily swap over if you see a better offer somewhere.
