user2:

Is VoLTE available for prepaid customers? The coverage website implies being on a supported plan.

I'm using an International S9 (SM-G960U1) (using the latest available software). I cannot enable the feature (it's not on the menu).

I was travelling overseas recently and was able to use VoLTE after popping in a VF NL SIM.

Should I keep my hopes up that it will work at some point?

Your model will be the cause.

Probably need to flash the NZ firmware.

This is exactly why providers should de-bundle Carrier settings from firmwares...

When is VoLTE being enabled for RBI (particularly the Vodafone Otaki tower)

RBI Rural Broadband with Calling (B525 Modem)

(Ticket# Inc000002572769 14/01/19 Home phone calls in progress, modem drops from 4g+ to 3g/2g & internet drops)

Seems modem is switching to 2nd cell tower for 3g and the internet connection drops for the duration of the phone call

This is not the contacted service that Vodafone should be providing!
Service worked OK (Calls and Internet until Dec 2018)

Since January I have changed the B525 modem network mode from “LTE Preferred“ to “4G Only” to disable CALLING

My B525 modem updated to support VoLTE on 27/08/19 (Software version: 11.191.61.04.3400_B00C1085) and VoLTE is enabled

@timbonz All 4G towers should be live with VoLTE in the coming month or 2 Vodafone is not going to give you a date for a single tower!

bender:

I see VoLTE on all my calls in Auckland since last week now, plus 700MHz 4G enabled in lots of central Auckland now too so I'm not dropping back to 3G in basements anymore which is awesome.

A couple of questions though @JasonParis

  1. What about VoLTE and international roaming?
  2. What about MOCN/MORAN and international roaming? Detail on why below.
  3. When will VoWi-Fi come?

I just spent several weeks in UK/France/Spain on roaming and almost every time I went into subway stations & trains I would lose signal entirely. Other people around me on the same network as VFNZ's local roaming partner e.g. VFUK, SFR (France), VFES (Spain) would retain coverage. I'm guessing the subway stations & trains use some kind of MOCN/MORAN solution to provide coverage underground and for whatever reason VFNZ's roaming agreements don't extend to this. Can/will this be resolved as it was annoying especially when relying on iPhone maps for directions & stops to get off at.

@bender - when you were travelling, was your phone updated with the right firmware upgrade for VoLTE?

Just received:

Vodafone is celebrating another key milestone with the rollout of a 4G Calling service across wider Auckland and RBI2 sites. Completed at the end of September, this enhanced 4G Calling will offer Vodafone customers with crisper, clearer voice calls over 4G as well as faster call setup when placing calls.

This follows Vodafone switching on New Zealand’s first Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) sites in June across Auckland’s North Shore as the first step of the rollout.

Key benefits of the VoLTE 4G upgrade, otherwise known as ‘4G Calling’, includes reduced background noise on voice calls and quicker call connection.

The wider Auckland upgrade has just been completed, and 4G Calling in Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown will be rolled out by December. RBI2 sites also support 4G Calling as these sites are switched on. The rest of the country network for 4G Calling is on track to be completed by the end of March 2020.

Sharina Nisha, Head of Platforms, Vodafone New Zealand, said: "This network upgrade will mean Vodafone customers experience improved voice calls over our already high-performing 4G network. VoLTE-enabled devices will stay on 4G rather than drop to 3G or 2G to make calls. And to ensure call continuity when moving, our 4G Calling service can seamlessly transition to 3G if required, which means Vodafone customers can expect an enhanced voice call experience overall.

“Another benefit of 4G Calling is it can reduce disruption if you were streaming video or downloading content when a call comes in, where 4G data speeds will be maintained. Also with 4G Calling, 5G data speeds will be maintained when we launch 5G in December.

“We've focused our rollout geographically to ensure a speedy rollout – and we expect to have completed these 4G Calling upgrades for customers across New Zealand by the end of March next year.”

The crisper, clearer 4G Calling is available to Vodafone customers on a wide range of devices across Auckland today (when using the latest software version). This includes newer Samsung models as well as the iPhone 6 and above.

As Sharina explains: “A key focus of our 4G Calling introduction has been on the end-to-end testing in conjunction with the phone manufacturers. Our technology experts have been working hard to enable enhanced voice calls for as many Kiwis as possible, and 4G Calling will be available on newer devices.

“Interestingly, we have more iPhone 6’s on our network than any other phone model, so this means many thousands of our customers who have an iPhone 6 can use VoLTE or 4G Calling on our network. The majority our customers will be able to use 4G Calling once we have completed the rollout early next year.”

This 4G Calling project is supported by technology partner Nokia, and delivers a key part of Vodafone’s voice evolution strategy.

For more information about 4G Calling, please visit: https://www.vodafone.co.nz/volte/

  • The devices that can now use VoLTE in Auckland include:

    • iPhone 6 and newer
    • Samsung S9/S9+, S10/S10+/S10E, Note 10
    • More models from Samsung and Huawei to follow
    • RBI/FWA CPE B525
    • Vodafone Branded Z9
  • Currently, Apple phone users will need to switch VoLTE on manually, under Settings>Mobile>Mobile Data Options>Enable 4G Voice and Data.
  • For Samsung handset users, VoLTE is set to be default on for VoLTE capable devices, so customers with an S9 or S10 will see “VoLTE” on the top of their screen.

Thanks Jason,

How do I upgrade my B315 to a new B525 (RBI in Papakura)

Drop me an email: Jason.paris@vodafone.com

Thanks

So thanks to @JasonParis I got a new B525 within the day and have set it up - nice to now be on 4G+, unfortunately It is still handing back to 3G on voice calls, but I expect Jason's team will have this sorted shortly.

I think there is a beer on me for Jason at the GZPA in November.

My phone has VoLTE in the same location even without the external antenna, so I believe it is a firmware or setup issue, just waiting to confirm this.

VoLTE roaming is incredibly complex and is one of those things like local breakout for data that is still a long way from being the norm.

One of the biggest failings in NZ right now is that RCG sites are 4G only meaning that inbound roamers will have zero voice coverage in these areas.

Check the B525 has the latest firmware. You should see a VoLTE option in one of the menus.

Hi Chris here from the Vodafone device team.

I have sent a query to you via the email link requesting further info.

It likely needs a firmware upgrade but will confirm that before we do so.

thanks

So the millions being spent on new tourist blackspot coverage is for nothing?

No, they get data when at those locations.
