dafman:

Ditto. Had fibre installed a couple of years ago but has sat unused as cable remained best value for money.

Have just powered on my Chorus ONT for the first time in a couple of years since install. It is not connected to anything at present.

The power light and GPON light are illuminated. I am assuming that the GPON light indicates I am good to go with moving to fibre and connecting to router?

Any chance that they would be out of date and need to download and flash updates, possibly leading to brickage if things go wrong?

We were told by the chorus guy installing the ONTs in our not used buildings at work to leave them on all the time so they get updates, which we have done. Never noticed any activity on the one that we can see.

I imagine it would just get updates as it authenticates and reboot at a decent time or in the next cycle.

@Wheelbarrow01 could comment on how the update lifecycle works.

If the ONT needed an update, due to missing our previous software pushes - It would have done it at boot time.

Even if that boot time is a couple of years since installation and being powered off?

Yep, no issue.
It doesn't need to go through every iteration. just download the latest as instructed by the OLT and done.

For anyone who hasn't seen what the aerial cable network looks like, here's an example from a street in Lower Hutt:

This is from Google Street View. The thicker black cable lower down on the pole is the one that would have to be removed if they want to decommission the network and remove the cabling.

Before anyone says "wow that's a big, thick cable" that's one of the thinner ones - I've seen some bundles almost the size of a man's arm, although I can't recall on which street, but I'm pretty sure it was also in Lower Hutt.

I’m wondering what will become to the Cable TV headend in Seaview (Parkside Road), drive past it every day and can still see cars in the car park. There are still 6 big Satellite dishes there plus the VHF/UHF antennas pointing at Mt Kaukau, the dishes look in bad need of needing to be sprayed with 30 Seconds or cleaned with a water blaster.

As a matter of interest, my internal Chorus fibre connection appears to be a small white box with a standard looking router mounted on it.

So would that just be Ethernet cabled to a computer/switch?  It appears to have 5 LAN ports, but no WAN, and also has a wifi antenna.

Is it therefore wifi capable?

Presumably, if one wants to retain a 'land-line', the wall unit would need to be cabled to (in this instance) an UltraHub or compatible OneNZ router for VoIP?

You should have one of these:

https://www.chorus.co.nz/help/ont

Despite the look and some having antenna - they do not perform the routing function.

You connect a router/Residential Gateway - either provided by your RSP of choice or BYO to one of the ports on our ONT (a.k.a fibre box)

Your RSP dictates if a landline is served from our ONT or their RGW, it varies by RSP.

Not like a Starlink dish then 😀

They have been known to brick if off for too long and try and jump too many updates.

Yep, it's the Model Type 300.

So, do any of the LAN ports work in router-fashion?   Presumably the ISP tells us which LAN to use as their connection?
